L32: (Q) vs Henri Squire (GER) WR 503
L32: (WC) Henry Patten WR 704 vs (2) Antoine Escoffier (FRA) WR 309

After Ryans tough week in UKPL, Stuart might be in with a chance in the standout match of the round. Paul Jubb versus Ali Gray would be good in last 16 and Dan Cox against Jakub Paul and then perhaps Aidan? JPJ versus Jan Choinski stands out for round 2.

really interesting draw

Kudos to the LTA for giving Dan Cox (age 31) a wildcard when some people said he didn't have a chance as they never give them to the oldies.

Indeed, Luke Johnson is not a youngster either (age 27), nor Julian Cash, or Henry (both 25)

A real 'old' batch of wildcards

I think the achievements of the big 4 and their longevity into mid 30s and beyond shows 25 and 30 isnt really old at all. If youre performing you deserve the fish thrown your way

 I didn't say the opposite.

OK

It almost looks as though the LTA literally just took the next four on the list.

Henry, Dan and Julian are three of the next four on the acceptance list, after the MD was done.

And Luke was only not there because he was automatically withdrawn, for Tunisia.

Indeed, he'd have made the MD directly if he hadn't been withdrawn.

So the only person with a slight beef is Dan Little as the list went:

(Luke)
Henry
Dan Cox
Dan Little
Julian

Clearly a policy change - its discriminatory. So they would be breaking the law if they imposed an age restriction

Julian Cash gained a wildcard option from Pro series?, but didn't use it for Bath.

Real shame for Joe N-Billington who looks like he's had to withdraw.

Tom Hands has the LL spot against Ali G

Er, what law do you think it would be breaking? Can't see the Human Rights Act or Equality Act having any application here.

But good to see a broader approach, for whatever reasons.

The wildcards who get a win obviously have this new possibility for further wildcards, which is nice too.

I like the idea of giving the real youngsters a wildcard into qualis. But I wonder how many older players missed out because of them.....

Whichever way, though, it's good to see the events, and the high GB participation.

Jelle Sels (who retired against Jan) has also pulled out of the dubs - which is a shame for his partner as they top seeds.

But it means Aidan and Stuart get a walkover....

Indeed. Absolute nonsense that they would be breaking the law by having age as a general factor (and I can't imagine a formal age restriction as such ). There are a range of widely accepted reasons for giving WCs including helping push forward promising youngsters, giving to locally based players etc etc.

Yes, some things such as race would be absolutely unacceptablele.  But otherwise they have loads of sensible freedom.

Well predicted as a close one, Jon. Ryan just got the better of Stuart 6-4 6-7(5) 7-6(5).  Not really following the UKPL I expected a clear Ryan win.

Yeah, he had a few tough matches there , winning 4 out of 6 (and not all in straight sets) and lost twice to Ali Gray, ending as runner up.

Maybe a little jet lagged after being down under, but a win is a win and gets the ball rolling.
