Week 4 - ITF W25 - Loughborough, UK Hard

Mimi superb. Her opponent wasn't particularly good but I loved how solid and secure everything looked. She's clearly been coached to built a brilliant base on which lots can be added and improved. Long way to go of course.

Very pleased (and impressed) to dee young Daniela play here. A lovely fluid game, with really good timing.

Mimi is a more know 'starlet' - great tennis for her age BUT ALSO great potential to improve further (that serve is going to get better).

(I know we always look further and further down the line, but our 2007-ers are very interesting)

Daniela was unlucky to get broken right at the end of the first set, 4-6 - missed a couple of lines by fractions. Will be interesting to see if she now fades away and the other plays a lot better.

Mimi thoroughly deserves to be a set and 3-0 up.

But harder to close it out....

 Or not

Great win for Mimi. I thought she had a chance, but I wasn't expecting it that easy...
I did see Mimi live when she won a TE event at Wirral just over 2 years ago and there were some good players in that field, Hep, Jadesola Cole etc.
I thought she was a real superstar that day.

I would be interested to see who she gets in the main draw. Someone is in for a tough match...

Watching Marni's match and when both players are on it, the standard is very high.
However both are prone to errors.
The player with the least errors wins this.

Daniela Piani's second set was a lot more one-sided, as expected. But not as much as the score indicates. She didn't go away. Still pushed. Could quite easily have won a couple of games.
A very good first showing.
Mimi's been in my 500-200-100 list ever since seeing her live against Eva Shaw.
Love the way she is so confident in the style and schemas of play that she wants to use.
And her rather face on serve will probably get tweaked as she gets older.
Whoever Mimi gets in the MD, I bet the odds won't be as generous as they were for today - I rather think that bird has flown.... Well done to Wales' finest

A nasty, nervy volley error on first MP.

And a DF on second.

The team were sounding a little nervy....

But Marni served an ace on the third

Lovely win. Lovely to see her back. Not sure about the new 'shriek' on her shots (turned the volume down a bit)

But you can't have everything.....

Good win for Marni. Much more consistent in the tie breaker.

And Marni makes it 5. Well done girls, taking the opportunities and winning matches against players 750 and below, in their late teens/early twenties, where as others have said there's really very little in difference in standard, is a great milestone of progress.

5 qualifiers, 3 direct entries, 4 wildcards.
Almost guaranteed that there will be a couple of all GB matches and points gained.

Draw is out
Talia has a real tough draw
Wildcards - Jasmine, Lauryn(again), Eliz and Sonay

3 all GB ties so winner picks up points

Mimi may well get her first point.

She will get a WTA point for qualifying, as do the other qualifiers of course. Am I right in saying that Mimi is aged 14? And therefore that the under 14 rule restricting points and rankings doesnt apply?

We'll obviously get the breakdown a little later with the rankings etc., but here's the full singles draw:

(1)Mariam Bolkvadze (GEO) v (SR)Deborah Chiesa (ITA)
Caijsa Wilda Hennemann (SWE) v Joanna Garland (TPE)
(wc)Sonay Kartal (GBR) v Freya Christie (GBR)
(7)Sarah Beth Grey (GBR) v Olga Helmi (DEN)

(4)Jana Fett (CRO) v (Q)Ambre Feder (FRA)
Viktoria Morvayova (SVK) v Weronika Falkowska (POL)
(Q)Gabriela Andrea Knutson (CZE) v (Q)Amarni Banks (GBR)
(6)Nastasja Schunk (GER) v Eden Silva (GBR)

(5)Joanne Zuger (SUI) v (Q)Sofia Nami Samavati (DEN)
Ayla Aksu (TUR) v Arina Gabriela Vasilescu (ROU)
(wc)Eliz Maloney (GBR) v (Q)Emily Appleton (GBR)
(3)Anastasia Kulikova (FIN) v (wc)Lauryn John-Baptiste (GBR)

(8)Pemra Ozgen (TUR) v Anna Gabric (GER)
Elena Malygina (EST) v (wc)Jasmine Conway (GBR)
(Q)Mingge Xu (GBR) v (Q)Emma Wilson (GBR)
(2)Valeria Savinykh (RUS) v (Q)Talia Neilson Gatenby (GBR)

I like that draw. Sonay has had Freya's number at the UKPL, winning all 5 matches including 6-0 6-1 in their last meeting in mid November, but what will happen in their first actual competitive meeting? An immediate R1 Eliz - Emily rematch from Bath, and one of our qualifiers are guaranteed a win (Mimi or Emma). Great to definitely have at least 3 Brits in R2, especially as at least 2 of them will be either qualifiers or a WC. Eden gets the Wimbledon Jr finalist from last year.

Yeah, Mimi turned 14 last October brittak (although no idea about the points situation).

Didn't realise you get a point for qualifying, but nothing for a 1st round loss.

For the Brits:
Sonay to beat Freya
Beth should win
Marni is a 50/50
Eden will struggle
Eliz v Emily is 50/50. Emily would win if it was a 15k....
Lauryn has a chance especially if the Finnish girl was as poor as at Bath
Jasmine has an outside chance
Mimi must be favourite against Emma
Talia big outsider

Four or five to get through.
