Week 4 - ITF W25 - Loughborough, UK Hard

Young Ava Williamson appears to be holding her own against the number 1 seed so far. Early doors but to take 4 games off her so far is a fabulous effort

16 matches, 21 Brits involved and 8 through out of a maximum of 15 (although 6 were guaranteed !) Some good performances but dissapointing from Anna Popescu and Nadi Rawson.

Did you expect them to play better than usual ?

Anna and Nadia were both seeded and lost in MTB - I wasn't expecting them to lose, but well done Talia and Daniella

Talia is reasonably promising though isn't she (or am I thinking of someone else)? She was also the 1.50 or 1/2 favourite, so expected to win the match in that sense. Daniella (who I hadn't heard of) was and average 4.54 or 7/2, so that was a bit of a surprise, but then I guess Nadia must be one of the most unpredictable players that I know at this sort of level - you can hardly ever tell what you are going to get as we have seen time after time at the UKPL.

Mingge won the final 6 games to recover from 1-5 in the second set.

So one definitely through (very likely to be Emily Ap), and hopefully we can get 2 or maybe even 3, at a push, through in the other 6 matches involving a Brit vs non Brit.

I'd hope Emma would win her match against the Australian.

I'd be surprised if there were any other GB qualifiers apart from Emily and Emma

Yeah, Emma was definitely my main hope. I saw bits of Jones' match with Freya D last week and I think that should be there for the taking, plus not the most convincing score line for her today either against young Chloe, and then it's a numbers game after that. I've never heard of Gimbrere and haven't checked her results / odds / age etc. yet, but certainly a year or so ago, you might have fancied Marni against a typical 700 odd player, so maybe some hope there.

I'm intrigued to know form those who watch a lot more of this level of tennis than I do exactly how great is the difference in ability etc between say Danielle Daley and her opponent tomorrow who is ranked at 1265 and whose career high is 1244?

Players that low in the ranking and frankly up to around 800 or so can have a ranking easily affected by one decent tournament which may have been of quite low level ability. Someone's ranking can fluctuate 100+ places simply by getting 3 points.
I realise this is a very general question and that each players case is different but as a general rule is there really much difference in ability between say someone ranked 800 and someone ranked 1200?

Talia is a 16 year old with a JCH=158. That suggests she could be improving quite fast and be capable of surprising a few opponents. She has, after all, already knocked out the 9th seed and may well worry the 7th seed.

It's not that simple, but if a player has been stuck with a ranking of 900+ for a couple of years, they could quite easily be turned over by a decent junior(350 or lower) or an improving player.

Thus I believe bar the two obvious candidates, 2 or 3 others could qualify.

I'd got 10p on Daniela, but it was only 2.8, which was quite tight I thought, for a 14 year-old.

Talia in fact was the clear favourite (1.5 versus 2.5)

So lots of people banking on the youngsters.

Both matches were close, though.

Great to see Marni's score but tomorrow will be more interesting.

Well done, to Mimi obviously.

That's two 2007-ers with nice wins.

 Very little.

As you say, there's a lot of randomness in it and a good domestic player in a country with strong domestic tennis (Italy, France, Germany etc) will be a lot better than your average WTA 1200 player.

Ambre Feder plays tons of tournaments, but only squeezes the odd win here and there - she's the sort of player who'll win a couple of quali rounds. That said, Danielle Daley is not soaring up the rankings either.

The bookies have Danielle as the clear favourite - 1.5 versus 2.5 for Feder.

Which shows the money doesn't believe the rankings either.
