Week 4 - ITF W25 - Loughborough, UK Hard

Eliz had a point for *5-1. Another strong showing but one that will sting.

I think Mimi just ran out of steam really. She's young, she's new to this level, it happens.

I was wanting to watch the Sonay vs Beth match, but I'm pretty gripped by this Joanna vs Mariam match, it's been going about 3 hrs 20 mins (possibly beneficial for one of our players), Joanna has saved 4 MPs overall, but has just been broken from 30-0 at 5-5, so Mariam serving for the match again. Making the most of my final few days WFH smile cry.

Lots of breaks in the all GB match, but 5-5 first set.

Sonay survives a long service game, saving BPs along the way to lead 6-5*. Been 3 breaks of serve each so far.

I'm with the bookies and Ace in that I would have had Sonay favourite going in though won't mind at all if Beth prevails in a good match and gains further singles confidence.

Beth won her serve to 15 to take it into a first set TB after 65 minutes play.

My my, Sonay is amazing. Seems to get to every ball and get it back in play. Beth threw everything at her in the last few games, and Sonay withstood it.

But Beth takes the tie-break.

Beth took that first set TB 7-4

Eden down 3-6 *4-4

Eden was beaten by 6-3 7-5

So our one home quarter finalist will come from the all British match where Beth is a set up but a break down in the second set vs Sonay.

7-6(4) 2-3*

Into a decider now 7-6 3-6.

Beth got it back to 3-3 (and serving), and I thought she might have gone on to close it out in 2 from that point, but 3 games in a row for Sonay. Apparently 2 hrs 12 mins, so it'll probably end up a similar duration as the Garland-Bolkvadze match. Beth hits a heavier ball than I can remember and very intense on pretty much every point.

I was/am hoping Sonay wins it, but with Beth being at a CH and not too far off getting herself into GS qual contention, so certainly wouldn't begrudge her pushing on in the rankings. Plus she is the 8th seed, so she would have been hoping for at least another QF, certainly before the draw was made.

Sonay holds, and has a bit of an opening on the Beth serve at 0-30.

This match is every bit as close and hard fought as I expected it to be. I really don't mind who wins as they both need the points, but the longer the match goes on. the more i feel it's Sonay who is coming out on top.

Oh no I'd better take that back as Sonay has just lost her serve with 4 unforced errors. So sorry

Beth breaks 7-6(4) 3-6 *3-2, perhaps she heard you wink

Turned on for the last set.
Terrific standard, but Beth has stepped up another level.

I thought the second set was much better than the third. Really high level from both players.

So Beth is the last girl standing and has Mariam Bolkvadze [1] in the quarter finals.

Just saw bits of what seemed a really good match.

Beth edges closer to the top 300 with Sonay again showing easily top 500 level and beyond. Both should certainly get into the top 300 at least if they stay fit and well.
