Boys & Girls: J3 Glasgow, UK - indoor, hard (Week 3)

There's a big J3 in Glasgow this week (qualis start tomorrow)

Big points on offer

GIRLS

Rather disappointingly, there are seven (!) byes in the first round of girls qualis - are there really not enough players who want to play good competitive tennis in their own country? Not even give it a whirl???

Hannah Smith and Paulina Jurkowska are the top two seed in qualis (with Brooke Black also playing)

Daniela Piani is on the list but not in the draw and may well have got a wildcard (after her BT win)

Mia Wainwright and Sirena Waas are two other names on the acceptance list but not in the draw

In the main draw list, Ella McDonald (hot off her win in Bath) is second seed but we have no other players until 9th on the list.

Abby Kelliher and Giulia Lesa will be two names I'll watch out for.

Great to see Hep O back - do hope she's actually playing.

And surprised to see Scarlet Perkins who has always been in Singapore until now.

BOYS

According to the acceptance list, Phoenix Weir is the 'star' draw here, top seed in the MD.

Viktor Frydrych is also there, and Jamie Diack, and Ben Gusic Wan (2007)

In the actual quali draw, Hugo Coquelin is top seed, followed by Kai-Luca Ampaw

Young Max Carrier is one I'll watch out for

More importantly, 32 entries - and all British

Lots of names I don't know, quite a few that sound Scottish - so well done to all the local lads who thought they'd give it a go - bravo to them

Max Carrier and Joe Mazingham, the two very promising youngsters, both won today. As did nearly all the q-seeds.

In the girls, they're through to the FQR round.

The main performance that stood out for me was young Sofia Maine (age 14) who beat Brooke Black (also 14)

Apart from that, all foreign quali players have been eliminated - so well done, girls :smile;

Phoenix Weir has won his opening round match and must be a big favourite for the title. I'm half expecting him to break into the top 100 by the end of the year.
Ella Mcdonald must be big favourite for the girls title.

 Only half expecting ???

Be brave biggrin

As to Ella, yeah, but I don't think we can dismiss the Belgian top seed girl so easily - she's won a J3 recently. And won a couple of ITF matches. I've no idea about her but she's 17 and seems a decent player on paper.

I'll also be very interested to see where Hep is, after injury etc.

R1 of the boys has finished.

The best win of the day was GB's Henry Jefferson (born 2006) who put out the 3rd seed, from Finland, 7-6(5) 6-3

Our Roy Keegan also beat the 7th seed from France.

However, Kyle Hughes (seeded 5) lost very easily, to GB's Kryan Magimay (2004)

All the other seeds went through

We now have 4 foreign lads left, in the last 16, which is not bad....

I'll be interested to see how Viktor F v Jamie Diack pans out in R2

In the girls, Ella (seeded 2) did indeed win her first round, 7-5 6-3

Top seed Belgian came through easily.

Thrilled to see Hep winning, 0 & 0

The US girl who came through qualis in Bath also won.

A lot of our girls lost, leaving 9 out of 15 girls left being foreigners (one match still to post result)

Young Abby Kelliher (2007) gets the win of the day for the girls, though, beating the 8th seed.

They've had some mega three-set matches this morning in Glasgow.

As expected Viktor v Jamie was really close, with Viktor edging it 6-4 in the third

Hugo Coquelin also needed to get to 7-5 in the third to beat young Ben Gusic Wan.

Ben Hudson came up just short, 4-6, in the third against the 6th seed.

the French boy needed 7-5 in the third to win his match too

The poor tournament referee........

But Oliver and Kyran won more easily......

In the girls, the top seed lost in three, and Ella beat Maria quite easily, so that clears one potential obstacle.

THe boys R2 has finished with another three-setter, with Henry J coming out the wrong side, 4-6, in third.

Phoenix won easily.

So the QFs are:

Phoenix v Oliver Hague
Kyran v Swedish lad
Viktor v French lad
Hugo C v Polish lad

In the girls, hats off to little fave, Hep, who's put out the third seed, 6-3 6-3

Abby K lost a very tight three-setter to Millie Skelton

So Millie, Hep and Ella are the only three GB girls left in.

Just to point out that in the girls last eight, there are three Brits but FIVE girls from the Netherlands....... it's basically a team event now.

Our own junior Fed Cup .....

I think the Dutch federation should chip into the fees for umpires etc, only fair....

When I was around 15 or so, I used to play the annual Ilkley Open each year, played early august. It was supposed to be a grass event but the weather would cause both of the indoor courts and also several red shale/clay courts to be used. Anyway, the Dutch would send over en masse their juniors squads to play for several years, maybe 6 or more in each event and age group from 12 through 18, and in the open mens and womens as well.

They were always very strong ground strokes, like automatons. And usually won.

In the boys' QFs:

Phoenix beat Oliver, 6-3 6-2
Kyran def. Swedish lad, 6-3 6-1
Hugo C def. Polish lad, 7-5 6-3

So there's only Viktor v French Etienne result to come, to give us 4 out of 4.

This will be Kyran's biggest result by miles - his previous best was a SF of a J5, and then R16 of a J5. This is a big step up - well done to him.

Real killer - VIktor loses a third-set tie-break to allow the French kid to go through, as the sole 'pesky' left standing in the boys

Meanwhile, young Hep (2007) continues her roll, putting out the 5th seed: 2-6 6-0 6-0

Hep only has three singles counters (!) - she is completely under-ranked - this will be a big boost
