Well done to Emina Bektas on qualifying. She beat McHale in her FQR and plays Samsonova in MD R1. Although that could / should have been Katie B that emerged from that qualifying section, the fact is that Emina beat her.
I haven't bought the suggestion that Emina has been prioritising singles. She has continued to partner Tara regularly in doubles and is at a CH not just in singles but in doubles as well.
I think Eminas ranking is now going to be high enough for qualifying for all the Slams this year without too much work at all. Therefore the benefits both financially and professionally as a Tennis player would suggest so she should and will. Even winning big ITFs or the odd WTA at doubles is worth less both in monetary terms and status. Doubles can always be picked back up easily enough at a later stage.
The only caveat to that is obviously the fact that her money in doubles isnt really halved given her wife being Tara, however even with that its makes sense at her age to give priority the next 2 or 3 years to getting towards the top 100, which is very possible for her once all the ranking points fall from others.
Tweet from Tara last wek, perhaps fearing the worst ...

I like Tara. But I do quite like to see predominately top singles players giving doubles a go in Slams.
If they did base entry into slam doubles tournaments solely on doubles ranking would that encourage top singles players to play more doubles matches to get a suitable doubles ranking?

Me too, but think I lean towards prioritising the bigger payday for the dubs players who dont get so much day to day over the singles lot who dont need the money as much. Thinking practically!
What does need fixing is teams with singles players in suddenly giving walkovers if they progress in singles. That I agree is v frustrating for the dubs players whod be committed to the whole tournament.

I'm with Indy, as above.
Let's count how many walkovers are given this event - my recollection (dodgy) is that there's very few walkovers in Grand Slam doubles - it's different for ATP/WTA events because they play every day, so no rest, AND the money is so big for dubs in GS
I don't agree with singles players giving doubles a go in slams and depriving players who earn their living from doubles the big pay day that they could get in slams. Singles players have already had the big pay day from turning up for singles they don't need the additional cash from doubles. If the sport is intent in more equal distribution of prize money so that more players can earn a living from tennis then they should be a system that doesn't deprive those that have chosen doubles as their discipline such opportunities.
Wow Coco lost to a Wang. Think it's the Wang that Harriet beat a couple of weeks ago.
It's a different Wang. Harriet beat Xin Yu Wang a couple of weeks ago. The Wang who beat Coco is Qiang Wang. Qiang is the player who beat Ash Barty at the 2019 US Open and Serena Williams at the 2020 Australian Open. Also she beat Jo Konta 6-4 6-0 at Miami 2019 winning 10 games in a row. Qiang was in the top20 in 2020. To add to the confusion there are three Wang's in the main .draw.
