The form player of latter 2021, (6) Kontaveit, is also out ( beaten by Clara Tauson ) from further up the draw. So the 3rd quarter has already lost ts top 2 seeds, the players seeded to meet in the QF. The top 2 for now are (12) Rybakina and (14) Halep.

Edit : Just realised the one player Kontaveit finally lost to at the end of 2021, in the group stages and final of the WTA tour finals, was Muguruza, and both are gone..

Meantime, Xinyu Wang ( from earlier Wang discussions ) eased to the first set against (2) Sabalenka. Currently though  6-1 *2-4

Sabalenka won in 3 sets. I wonder how many double faults she served.

19 in total. 12 double faults in the opening set. 6 in her first service game. Xinyu Wang had 7 in total. 6 in the last two sets.

Ach. Close but no cigar. That was a huge chance to make round 3. Had a set point at 6-5* too. Shame, especially with Cornet waiting in the next round.

Rybakina who beat Emma last week retired with an injury in her match against Zhang.

Kovinic 0-3 down to Emma wins first set 6-4. Emma has blisters in her hand.

No surprise it's troubling her most on her serve. Poor kid that will be really sore.

Looks like it might be just left to Dan to fly the singles flag

Have to admire Emmas spirit and tenacity- trying to protect her hand by slicing most forehand and is 2-1 up in the second. Go Emma!!!!L

Don't quite know how she managed that... whatever the end result, well done!

Yeah she's doing her best and still smiling but it's a real shame. She can't play properly at all. Absolutely remarkable she's pushing it this close. Just missed a break point in the opening game of the decider too.
