Jasmine Conway

Jasmine (born 2004) come from Herts, I think.

She was a player that we called out in the juniors thread here a couple of years back, as someone who should be on the radar (and she then made rapid progress, up to winning a J2).

And then (rather in Eden Silva style), she basically stopped playing juniors and moved into adult.

She is currently ranked WTA 1132, based mainly on playing a lot of events and chalking up some R1 wins.

Yesterday (aged 17) she won her R1 match at the 25k in Bath, beating the Romanian player ranked 615 in true style.

Huge kudos to Jasmine, who is playing the ITF 25k at Glasgow and who has come through qualis and now won two rounds in the MD, beating a top-200 player today !!!

"Glasgow W25 R2: Well done to @jconwaytennis on a big career best ranking scalp - Jasmine upsets former top 100 player & no. 3 seed Valeria Savinykh RUS WR 200 (CH 99 in 2012), 828 places above her, 7-6(2) 7-6(5)! "

Didn't Jasmine have a lot of time out with injury after looking a great prospect in her very early junior days?

You might be right but, from my recollection (which can be dodgy!) I don't think so .....

I think you might be thinking of Sonay (well, it definitely applies to Sonay, just possibly Jasmine as well but ....)

It really is a great win. I was looking back at retrospective pre match odds and the only win with wider odds was the last time (and only time until now) that she reached an ITF QF and that was a Sharm W15 R2 win over Elina Avanesyan in November 2020, a month before her 16th birthday (ave odds 3.66 vs 4.41 in the respective matches). Elina had just turned 18 and was ranked 720 at the time, and fresh off a first ITF title, but in the past 15 months, and 7 ITF finals later, she has since risen to a CH 178, so she was near the start of her sharp rise.

But the fact this was against someone in the top 200, in a bigger event, and in the UK, this has to be her best win.

Really good

Perhaps I should be betting on Brits to win rather than in Glasgow R1 putting 2 singles and a double on Sonay and Jodie to lose. To be fair the double was 20/1.

Looking at her activity, she had about 7 months out in 2020, which at her age of development was probably somewhat impactful. She looks to have made a few Grade 4 semi's at the age of 14.

I think (but could be wrong) that the time out in 2020 was due to covid - that's when there were very few events going on. However, she did have an injury the year before:

"Jasmine Conway, 15, picked up limbus vertabrae worn disc injury in April last year [2019] and was sidelined until September."

But I'm not sure it's hugely more than a lot of players. So many teenagers have injuries, I don't think 3-4 months off is that unusual.
