RE: Week 2 - ITF W25 - Bath, GB Hard

Great win for Lauryn. I was hoping she would have been in line to face one of the GB GBs in the next round, but upon checking, she is guaranteed to face a qualifier, and that's also a high seed out.

Emma W battling away against the top seed. She was an early break up, but now *5-6, and game point.

The big one up next smile.

Kulikova's tiebreak was almost as bad as Emily A's!

Emma stays steady and a big, bad miss from the top seed gives her the first set 7-6(3)!

Two excellent forehands down the line from Emma and a load of crud shots from her opponent give Emma the first set tie-break against the top seed.

No sure what has happened to Emily Appleton, but she was a real talent 3-4 years ago, now losing to Eliz Maloney..

Emily has always had trouble at W25 level despite her success at lower levels - I make it that she has now played 30 W25 singles R1 matches and won just 3 of them, all against players ranked outside the top 500. Funnily enough, she won the very first one, against a certain Beth Askew (now Beth Grey, of course) way back in 2015.

Anyway, congrats to both Eliz and Lauryn on their first W25 singles main draw wins. Lauryn now has 8 points from just two events and needs just one more win (here, since she'll then have more than 10 points) or another counter to get back on the rankings, having been ranked as high as 1070 in 2017 before she went to college in Arizona and stopped playing on the circuit. (since I haven't been around here much in recent months, apologies if that is all old news!)

Not seen Emma before, but has a nice game. Volleying can be tidied up and she is hitting the ball deep and accurately.

The top seed is making far too many errors and not playing to anywhere like here ranking.

Could Eva MAKE any more unforced errors if she tried?

The top seed has been having a real sulk all match.......allez, Emma

Super win for Emma.

Her last ball looked well out to me (and to her opponent)

Not that it made any difference - she won it 6-0

Don't know what was going on in the Finnish woman's head today.....

But that's a great result, in a 25k, being a wildcard.

NB Eva getting a lot of MTO attention for her right arm....

Kulikova is probably thinking if she'd got her ranking up a week earlier she'd be in Melbourne. Now ranked well inside what the cut would have been.

Yes Emily is a sad example of a bright, good, player not having people round her to give her the right advice. She would have had a standout college career I suspect. And the tour would have still been waiting for her if she wanted, as it was for Lauryn.

Is there any reason Emily still couldn't go? Didn't Jade Curtis go at a similar age years ago?

Just turned on the battle of the juniors and very impressed with both in the second set.(Ella v Eva)
Both have decent futures if they keep progressing.

Beth's title to lose now. No star performers left in the draw...

I thought that was a pretty poor match between the two 2005-ers

Good to see Ella play. Effective tennis. Rather dodgy serve technique (but lots of people have quirky serves)

But Eva was really poor - over-hitting the whole time, and battling the ball rather than playing 'with' it.

Big congrats to Ella - lovely to have a MD win
