Both Heather and Katie B with decent scores, and very close (on the face of it).

But no points for second place in tennis....... :(

Heather Looks like there was very little in it from the live scores.

Yes, I watched quite a bit and thought Heather looked pretty good, from 'the off'.

FQR: BOULTER, Katie (GBR) 8 149 (CH=82 2019) v Daria Saville (AUS) 419 (CH=20 Aug 2017). She is coming back from achilles tendon surgery as she didn't play for most of 2021. She beat (4)Caty McNally in Q1.
(formerly Gavrilova - recently married Luke Saville)

Daria was in on a wild card. I assume she also has a special ranking as she's been out for so long, although she wouldn't need it in Australia as I'm sure she'd get wildcards wherever she wanted to play.

Better than I was expecting.

Does anybody know what Ms. Watson's current coaching arrangement is? She seemed to use one of the locals for her preseason block in Florida.

From Steven:

With qualifying now finished, Katie Boulter is 2nd in line (behind Vögele) for a lucky loser place in Adelaide

Have Heather and Katie lost their clothing sponsors? They both appeared to be playing in unbranded tops.

Katie's most recent photos from Adelaide on Instagram would suggest she's still a Nike lady.

The poster on Tennis forum who updates players' clothing sponsorship deals seems to think so.

From reading various articles on the subject, typically top 40 and potential stars of the future get paid, the rest get free clothing. So neither fall in the category of player that you'd expect to be paid at this stage.

No withdrawals showing at the moment.

I see that Daria Saville has drawn Iga Swiatik in the first round, with the winner to play Leylah Fernandez

Perhaps Nike have given up on Katie now Emma's the new star of British Tennis, that said she would seem an obvious signing for Ellesse now Konta's retired.

Too many unforced errors on key points I thought. Both players were ok and it was a tough draw for Heather, though, frankly, she's lucky her ranking is mainly there because of results two to two and a half years ago. Her 2021 was terrible and probably outside the top 100 really.

Typical early season match.

Yes Katie could go on and sign up for Ellesse and then advertise them as much as Jo did in the last 3 years.
