Week 48 - ITF W25 - Jablonec Nad Nisou, Czech Rep. Carpet

Brilliant !

Didn't see the first set.

But the second was very well played by Beth. She broke, and then faces quite a few break back points, in following games, where she played some super points to stave off the threat. Really deserved it. Excellent win:

R2: GREY, Sarah Beth (GBR) Q 406 def. ASTAKHOVA, Darya (RUS) (7) 300 (CH=288 2021) 6-1 6-4

Where has this form come from? She's really having a solidly consistent few months. Good for her!

A few posters on here ramble on about players concentrating on doubles, or conceding to doubles as I would refer to it. So well done on working hard and trying to have a real shot as a tennis player rather than taking the easy option. Onwards and upwards and best of luck to Sarah Beth. Great to see

It seems to me that she needs confidence boosting (as well as playing good tennis!), so all these wins must be doing a world of good. Hoorah!

Opted not to play doubles and looks fitter and stronger as well. Both factors in this I believe. You reap what you sow and get back what you put in I always believe so lets get behind her and hope she can push on up the rankings. No reason why not.

I often wonder if the likes of Luke Bambridge or Jonny OMara have any regrets in giving up. Its never too late guys.

QF: GREY, Sarah Beth (GBR) Q 406 (CH=403 2021) v MAKAROVA, Ekaterina (RUS) 384 (CH=382 2021)

They played last week with Sarah Beth winning 4 & 1.

Beth is definitely a player who struggled with her self belief and as we've discussed before had a tendancy to get so so tight at the business end. It's not a surprise to me that things clicking in singles come after a string of good weeks on the doubles court. She's really turned things around since she and Em lost that heartbreaker at Wimbledon where her shoulders went to lead trying to close it out. Everything is just flowing that little better and her lefty swing is just skidding off these courts beautifully. And I agree she looks in brilliant shape, and just all round happy on court.

I still think she has a much lower ceiling in singles than doubles, but she's getting to the stage now where she doesn't have to so obviously pick one over the other schedule wise. Which is great. She's got a good opportunity to keep shuffling up over the next 6 months.

More anti-doubles tosh from this opinionated poster. Beth is doing well recently but still has zero chance of making Top 150 as a singles player. She is an excellent doubles player who, with a regular partner, could make Top 50 and a career in Grand Slam events as a doubles specialist. Such a pity that the poster doesn't understand that singles and doubles are different strands of the same sport. One is NOT inferior to the other.

Jaggy might rub various people's backs up (maybe he enjoys it ) but I think that doubles is inferior to singles too. (I don't think the players are inferior as people, or they shouldn't choose it, but the sport is inferior in terms of level).

After all, there are less draws in Grand Slams, nearly all top singles players are very competent doubles players (often a lot better than the top ones) but hardly any top doubles players are very competent singles players, the crowds are a lot less, public interest is a lot less.....

I don't have a strong opinion about Beth and her choices, and I definitely think that a lot of players are wise to choose doubles, it gives them the chance to have a career where they couldn't otherwise. But I blame the UK tennis industry (again) for many of our young players having to make the choice too early (Luke, Jonny etc) - Continental players have club tennis and sponsorship to sustain them and allow both disciplines to run side by side far more easily.

Do you wonder the same about Joe Salisbury, Jamie Murray and, to a lesser extent, the Skupskis? As they look at their bank accounts I strongly suspect that they are pretty content with the decisions which they made!

These excellent points scores run in tandem with even better results in doubles.  Biarritz-Lost Final, Prerov-Won Final, Montreux-Lost Semi, Le Neubourg-Lost Semi, Nantes-Lost Quarter. All played with a series of different partners. Beth has always tried to play both singles and doubles.   She hasn't played doubles this week only because there were no 60+ events which would give her extra dubs points.
