I hope Sofia's back has recovered (pulled muscle last week), as she's been taken to a deciding set by the JR28 Palicova. Doubles scheduled on the same court later.

Edit:- Looks OK, but lost to a Czech net cord at 7-8 in the tie-break

Yes Sofia nearly stole it in the breaker but missed her two match points after saving several to get to that stage. Palicova looks a good prospect, and Bartunkova is obviously a massive talent. So suspect it could be a tough afternoon.

There's a ton of promising Czech youngsters competing these two weeks, including a top 100 junior 14 year old on court now. The pipeline they have is just incredible.

Frightening isn't it. Bartunkova reached the final last week - and she's only 15 !

There were 15 Czechs in ualfying this week, although only two made it through to the ain draw. 6 more in the main draw, including 4 wild cards.

Oh for the return of ITF's in Britain........not long to wait now.

Just as tough as we expected

L16:- Sofia Shapatava (GEO) / Emily Webley-Smith (GBR) CR573 (328+245) [3] LOST TO Nikola Bartunkova (CZE) / Barbora Palicova (CZE) CR2949 (1258+1691) (15yo-JR32 and 17yo-JR28) [WC] 1-6 4-6

A few dodgy calls in the second set didn't help.

There are three UK W25s listed so far on the ITF site, Bath 10th January, Loughborough on 24th Jan and Glasgow on 14th Feb.

There are actually eight according to the LTA - the ITF calendar doesn't show the W25 at Edgbaston on 7th Feb (or the M25 at Shrewsbury the same week), nor the four in Nottonham in April/May.

PDF available at https://www.lta.org.uk/play-compete/performance-tennis-players/competitions-calendar/ (Scroll down to link at the bottom of the page), but it doesn't tell you much more at the moment.

There are supposed to be 16 mens and 16 womens during the year

Enjoyed that fight back from Beth. She was a break down in the second set.

Nice play

Good win for Beth - I assume she will jump ahead of Tara in the rankings when the points get added

Beth was already due to move ahead of Tara as GB #11 as a result of last week's W25 Q + R2. She will be up to 142 points on Monday ( live ranked 398 ) as against Tara's 140 points.

Same again so far this week should push that ranking up further on Monday week.

Beth still has some 3-point and 5-point counters, so any main draw win at W25 or above is going to add points. There was one pick for Beth in the predictions competition, so watching these results with interest !
