Week 47/48 - Davis Cup Finals - Madrid (Spain), Innsbruck (Austria), and Turin (Italy) (indoor hard)

I think Joe had backstrain in Turin. If we get the two singles wins, the doubles would become irrelevant to both sides so may get cancelled - theres no crowd to worry about - or maybe Dan or Liam would replace Joe, preferably Liam to give him a match alongside Neal. but I suspect it would be cancelled. If we win both singles that is.

Ah, I have only now just properly read up on the format.

And I see the QFs are made up of the 6 group winners plus best 2 RUs.

So we have to do more than just ensure 2nd in our group, which I agree one win against the Czechs would ensure

We have to be a at least one of the best 2 RUs. If we lose 1-2 in matches to the Czechs so have a record of Ties: 1-1and Matches: 3-3 that would likely come down to % sets won as to whether we progress. Here we are 4-2 after the France tie so start well placed but without studying all the group possible permutations I would say that losing the Czech tie 1-2 with two 0-2 set losses would not be clever and indeed fairly likely put us out, with a then best possible final 6-6 sets position. If we are in a 3-3 match position we probably want to ensure that we at least finish with overall more sets won than lost.

Yes Id forgotten that and indeed Sweden look like they could be second with 1 win and 4-2 on sets so that could be the benchmark needed. Best to just win, eh.

Whether it's football Euros or World Cups or tennis Davis Cups or whatever I have an inherent dislike of formats that are not based on 4 or 8 groups and thus involve calculation across the groups of best RUs or best 3rds as to who reaches the KO stages.

If anyone watched the GB dubs game today, I'd be Interested in what people think of the partnership..
Perhaps not fair to judge until tomorrow, when hopefully both being fit they can hit it their best if selected.

Theyve done well together historically - won ATP San Diego just before the US Open in August and won ATP 500 In Vienna in 2018 . so they know each other and have results.

neal can also play with Dan , having done well in Masters events in Miami and Monte Carlo, earlier this year,  reaching the final in both.

and Joe is ranked 3 in the world. So joe and Neal should be fine, if joe isnt fit, Dan playing with Neal would work, helped by Dan being our number 2 singles and thus having a rest before the doubles tie is played.

Apparently Joe has barely trained since arriving but the back strain has healed.

Djoko and Serbia lost to Germany. Germany should beat Austria to progress and top Group F - if we win our group, we would likely play them in the last 8, therefore.

That would Struff v Norrie and Koepfer v Evo; krawietz and putz the doubles pair. Tough team but very beatable.

Italy indeed got a near 3 am finish in Turin last night and although they lost the doubles , they won the tie and are the first country into the last 8.

Have to say they have one of the best squads but this is in fact a very open competition.

Looking back to last time, the best group runners up got through with a 4-2 and 3-3 score line respectively - 5 of the 6 teams in 2019 ended on 3-3 and it was decided on sets percentage .

Which backs up that Britain really just need to win today to avoid leaving it to chance .

Thats interesting - unless they think they have a good chance of Lehecka beating Cam, it must be injury related ?

Lehecka hits it pretty big I think, big serve certainly. They might think he will give Cam more problems then Vesely who is more of a grinder.

That makes a lot of sense - hard to out grind Cam!

Machac has come out firing on all cylinders and leads 4-2.
