They're Class of 2021, so they're already in their Freshman year , and most likely be listed under the US General Signings and General Chat for Fall 2021/Spring 2022.

Maybe just limit this thread to the signings as the 2021/22 General chat is still very much active? Just a thought?

 Sounds good

Oliver Tarvet (UTR 12.64) has verbally committed to @USDmtennis San Diego - and will join the Toreros in the fall of 2022. The 17-year-old has an ITF juniors career-high ranking of #189 and is ranked #3 in Great Britain's U18 rankings.

Very competitive for scholarships, especially on the mens side with so many of the players using their extra year of eligibility to study for a masters/MBA.

Out of interest , and Im sure youve answered this question before , what level is college tennis. Are we talking itf 25 at the top end or more like 15? Or is it a much wider spread top and bottom than that?

Oh I'm going to go with 'It depends' , but I wouldn't be surprised if someone like Elegant Point has done or is aware of some detailed research into this.

I say it depends because the level of college tennis is a combination of several factors like the conference you're playing in and also the position you're playing at. Power 5 conferences (Big 10, Big 12, ACC, PAC12 and SEC) tend to be the strongest conferences in the States with the strongest players playing at singles positions 1-3 /4. I wouldn't be surprised if players who have been in those conferences and at those positions are able to transition to some ITF 15ks comfortably or even progress into the latter stages of the 25ks . Alastair Gray (TCU /Big 12 conference) has recently done well in some ITF25ks in South Africa recently. And Giles Hussey who usually played at positions 4/5 at Tennessee/SEC has been making some in-roads at 15k. Arthur Fery, Toby Samuel also seems to be making some progress at 15k level when they've entered the events.

Worth noting also that some ITF 25ks might even be weaker than a 15k , but in general I would lean towards strong college tennis being like a ITF 15k with the odd exceptions here and there. Would be interesting to hear other people think

Thanks cya - makes sense. Out of interest, I know local itf events invite players from local colleges to play as wild cards, do you know of any of the bigger National events like the ITA just played that Arthur did well in, do they feed into any wild cards for challengers or even atp events in the States? Or maybe qualies for them ?

You're right that local itf events invite players from local colleges to play e.g. Johannus Monday was awarded a QWC into the Knoxville Challenger a few weeks ago and Emile Hudd was awarded a WC into the doubles draw - as the event was held at the university grounds.

Winners of the NCAA Championships singles (and doubles) get wildcards into the US Open main draws I believe ;and the runner up into the qualifying draw ( I don't know when this started as I don't recall Paul Jubb receiving a WC when he won the NCAA Singles Championships, and neither did Eden Richardson when she won the NCAA Doubles Championships - unless it only applies when a US citizen wins ) . Apart from that I'm not aware of any other college events feeding into WCs but that's not to say that it doesn't happen - just not aware.

When the WC into US Open qualies was initiated for NCAA winners it was only for US citizens.  Not sure if that is still the case but it sounds like it.

Not a player I have heard of, but Matt Rutter (UTR 11.87) has signed with @PennMensTennis and will join the Quakers in the fall of 2022. The 18-year-old Brit has an ITF juniors career-high ranking of #199, winning one singles and four doubles titles.

That's an Ivy League school, good on him. Added to the list

The Ivies and D3 dont offer athletic scholarships; spotted on Cyas list that Evan Mackenzie has signed to the University of Delaware -  fellow Brit James Wilkinson is on the roster and JoJo Bach was on the womens roster Freshman and Sophomore years,  but is now showing on the roster of the  University of Maryland for her Junior year.

Uni Delaware is on the list of public Ivies which started as a list of 8 schools in 1985 published by Greene, who then expanded the list in 2001 to include an additional 30 universities.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_Ivy

Nachbar (link) bellow has a slightly different take on what makes a public Ivy and his list of those meeting the criteria 2019-20 is very short.

  • Binghamton University (NY)
  • St. Marys College of Maryland
  • SUNY-Geneseo
  • The College of New Jersey
  • University of Delaware
  • University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
  • University of Maryland-College Park
  • University of Massachusetts-Amherst
  • University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill
  • University of Texas-Austin
