Emma is seeded to meet Simona Halep in the final.

Somehow it seems wrong that Emma is seeded higher than Simona.

Halep is winning matches but hasn't won a tournament this year. Meanwhile Emma has won one really big one. Emma has only got to keep playing and winning a few matches to keep climbing the rankings, at least until next year's Wimbledon. Rankings should have settled down, one way or another, by this time next year.

Obviously Halep spent a significant part of the year injured (which included 2 slams) and being unable to defend her Wimbledon title as well. She has only played 13 tournaments this year.

Thanks, I didn't realise that Halep had been injured, that ranking makes more sense now.

Yes, she tore a calf muscle during a match in Rome and was subsequently out for months. So it seems a bit false to say Halep is winning matches but not tournaments in 2021 when, as above, she has only played 13 all year (incl this one).

There does tend to be a reason behind ranking drops whether it is poor form, injury or other - it doesn't often come out of nowhere.

Plenty folk would argue that the ATP and WTA rankings do lie in these confused covid times.

Though they are what they are for now, and no solution would have suited everybody. Hopefully they will be back on track by the end of 2022.

I am sure much of the talk will end up being about her new (to be confirmed) German coach, Torben Beltz.

Emma's great rival and no 2 seed Halep on course to come through here (7-5, 3-1) but she's not having an easy time of it by any means.

Yes. I'm wondering which Emma is going to turn up here.

Emma has already done better than her last match by holding her serve in the opener. The commentary sound like they are getting their excuses in early saying that she hasn't been training properly.
