It could well be Wang now that the 4 qualifiers have booked their place in the main draw, and have subsequently been placed. Emma faces the winner of Xinyu Wang vs Kozlova.
Just going by what your lot said on TF Ace, ha, ( or 1 person did anyway )
Haha. It is looking a lot more likely now anyway - she is a 1/2 favourite to win her R1 match, but at the time, she hadn't won her FQR match (and lost the first set), and there was a 50% chance that she would have landed in that Emma Q vs Q spot, and a 50% chance that she wouldn't, plus had her R1 been vs a different Ukrainian qualifier (Tsurenko), she probably wouldn't have been favourite to make R2.
It will be an interesting match if it happens. She's a year older than Emma, and had better success at the Jr slams, and is now starting to win a few more matches on the WTA scene and slowly moving up the rankings. Still pretty erratic though.
Xinyu Wang landed her last 6 first serves, taking her overall first serve percentage to 50% in her win over Kozlova. In her two qualifying matches, her first serve percentage was 54.4% and 51.9%. The WTA stats have her average first serve percentage for the season as 51.3%. She looks talented in the rallies, good use of drop shots and volleys, very fast across the court but there were times in the first half of the match when her returning was awful; she won 4 points on return in the opening set.
how fast are the courts in Linz, relevant to that point about punishing second serve...
Slower than US Open, much faster than Indian Wells. Perhaps slightly faster than Transylvania. The bounce seems normal. I've watched a fair amount of 3 matches and a few points from 2 others, so the sample size is quite small.

Emma is 4th on centre court tomorrow after an 11.30 start (UK 10.30). The 2nd match is not before 2pm (UK 1pm) so Emma is likely to start around 4pm (UK).
Somehow it seems wrong that Emma is seeded higher than Simona.
Halep is winning matches but hasn't won a tournament this year. Meanwhile Emma has won one really big one. Emma has only got to keep playing and winning a few matches to keep climbing the rankings, at least until next year's Wimbledon. Rankings should have settled down, one way or another, by this time next year.
