Week 43 - WTA 250 - Cluj-Napoca, Romania Hard

Madadman is far better informed than me, the addict

I remember Kostyuk playing Jodie a couple of times in juniors but never Emma (I only follow tennis europe in a spotty way - there is also U12 and U16 but the singles result madadman's linked to is certainly U14.

The only thing I've noticed is that Marta has been playing a LARGE number of adult tournaments, practically week in, week out, at some points. It's quite a lot for someone young and so good as a junior - you might expect them to target events more. She hasn't really had great results either. However, it's possible that financial considerations were utmost and she needed to boost her ranking asap.

Interesting though not sure how relevant U14 matches are now. And one of Emma's favourite phrases about an upcoming opponent is "... is a great player/opponent"

Brilliant, thanks all. The matches probably aren't relevant now, but Emma hasn't forgotten

Halep's match has just ended so Emma should be on shortly.

Oops. Another break. Emma seems forlorn. First set to Kostyuk 6-2.

Emma's fourth double fault gives Kostyuk another break at the start of set two. Kostyuk seems to be growing in stature as Emma diminishes. Emma needs to find some fight or this can slip quickly away. Come on Emma.

Down 1-2* second set. Getting a bit of a beating. Kostyuk playing a decent match, although Emma is the architect of a lot of her own misfortunes.

This is a depressing watch. Emma's just not been at the races today.

Should have closed that last game. Some good points but a lot of pretty poor play. Kostyuk stayed on the front foot throughout, nice and aggressive, very clean. She's due a big breakthrough, be interesting to see how she gets on against Halep.

To be honest the mess Emma made of the first game sort of set the tone. She never recovered.

Emma wanted that match over and get off the court asap from the start of the second set. Maybe slightly injured, maybe sulking, doesn't really matter, she wasn't into it.

Oh well - that's a shame but not a big deal in the great scheme of things for Emma. Nice that she will be with family anyway to relax and recover. She started so well in that 1st game and then it just went pear shaped - if she's won that maybe the adrenal might have got her through - but clearly she was a bit below par.

I don't see her as a sulker, just a realist more like.
