Week 43 - WTA 250 - Cluj-Napoca, Romania Hard

Amazon don't usually have studio coverage for a 250 tournament but might they make the effort for Emma's sake?

Amazon will only do it if there's money in it for them

Have I understood right that kontaveit winning the final in Moscow today mathematically seals that Emma cant make the tour finals even if she went on another crazy won and won her last two tournaments? Also just noticed that Linz seems to finish AFTER the tour finals start?! Would that mean it doesnt count for qualification for them?!

Kontaveit winning didn't make any difference to Emma's situation as next week is the final scoring events as far as qualification goes. Linz is the same week as the YECs, but starts a couple of days earlier as they pushed the YECs a couple of days back to allow more rest between the BJK Cup finals and the WTA Finals starting.

Assuming the 7 who have qualified show up (that's not including Barty) as well as either Kontaveit and Jabeur to make the 8, and the one who misses out takes the first alt, Emma would be 2nd alt with the Cluj title, assuming Osaka doesn't randomly turn up for that role. I'd personally rather she played Linz than be 2nd alt in Mexico if that position happened to present itself.

Emma's match is 4th on the centre court tomorrow after a noon start. Romania is 2 hours ahead of us so it should start sometime after 2pm UK time.

I believe it's not before 6pm local, so NB 4pm here:

transylvaniaopen.ro/order-of-play

I don't think the WTA had NB on their OOP, but I'd be more confident trusting the official site than the WTA, especially these days, haha. Bit of a shame it wasn't 2nd after 4pm UK. 7.30/8pm in Romania would have probably been better for those over there watching on TV too.

TNNS app shows 4 pm UK time as well.

Yeah, I can't say I'm too disappointed. I was originally really looking forward to the BJKC finals and had far more interest in that than the YECs, but that's obviously changed a fair bit in recent days. Fortunately Spain do still have a couple of top 100 players, but from the events POV, it's a big shame. Worse for Canada though, they replaced Fernandez with Zhao, and there's been a few more big name withdrawals. Bencic has been pulling out of events left, right, and centre since her Chicago 500 injury, so likely a doubt as well, and at the moment, I believe Krejcikova is the only YEC player still involved, assuming she hasn't already pulled out too.

I do like team events, so will try to still enjoy it, but it definitely has been affected, and still time for a few more withdrawals as well. Still no UK TV the last I heard as well, so hopefully someone picks it up this week.

I really hope we look after Emma better than how the likes of Osaka have been. I really fear that the expectation is so high for her just now on the back of a remarkable chains of events that cleared her path for the US Open. Personally Im not expecting her to beat top 10 players on a regular basis for a while, any top 100 win is still a success for now for me.

At this level you just can't afford to miss some of the opportunities that she's missing. Experience definitely showing.

4-6 3-2*....

Getting a wee bit flustered. It's all really understandable stuff that's not hitting the mark. Its just New York has completely altered the level expectations, but as a new girl to the tour she's actually doing fine against an experienced opponent who throws in tricky balls. 6 months ago it's exactly the sort of performance I'd have been hoping to see from her moving up as part of a 'normal' trajectory. A couple of chances a bit too wasteful have really cost her so far.
