Week 40 - WTA1000 Indian Wells, USA Hard

my uneducated view is that we most likely will see Emma have some ups and downs over the next 4 events she has entered (incl Linz OR WTA Finals)!!

My instinct, nothing more , is a couple of early losses, maybe a title as well. She is learning but clearly very capable and that would fit.

No idea what order we will get those in of course!!

I think given Emma has yet to play to play a top 10 player there will be more downs than ups, at least initially. Will be interesting to see how she copes with this. The test will be when she is up against the likes of Barty, Osaka, Muguruza etc.

Edited post as Bencic was top 16 when they played.

I must admit that I have no expectations for Emma to win any matches over the next few weeks. She will be under a lot of pressure wherever she plays, and I think any wins will be a bonus. In fact I hope she doesn't have to play any top 10 players this year, so she can get more time being used to being on the tour.

Heather plays Sloane Stephens.

Wow. Can't wait for the plethora of unforced errors and general lack of enthusiasm and self belief. Whoever implodes the least will win.

Heather and Sloane were really really good friends when they were younger; I don't know if they still are ?

Bet365 have Emma 6/1 fav to win I W, with a number of other players someway back at 12/ 1. Heather at 500/ 1 may interest some as a fun bet... maybe not then !

Ouch. Katie definitely needs a break. I wonder if the pressure of losing funding is affecting her and Harriet - I think theyre too old for the support programme soon and imagine thats intimidating.

noticed on the BBC today Emma talking about Jeremy Bates - seemingly hes just there to help temporarily on the side, he travelled with Katie B.

Though to be fair since the IW entry list came out, with Trevisan ranked 106, she has won a MD round at the US Open, been runner up in a WTA 125 and won an ITF 80K title. She is now WR 66 which at entry date would easily have got her into the MD.

Interesting re Emma. She may well lose early. But if she gets on a roll again you never know.

It's just as well Trevisan hit a bit of form as she's back out to 114 in the live rankings once French Open 2020 points drop off next week, which would have obviously been far worse if not for this revival. She lost 12 of her 13 matches from last October up until the end of May. Still a bit of work for her to do to secure her AO main draw spot.

Surprised after everything that's happened how negative people still are about Emma's prospects going forward. I don't expect her to win every tournament but I don't see now why she should fear anyone and I don't think she does either.

I agree.Surely it's the other players fearing Emma. Looking at the draw the likes of Halep and Azarenka are injury prone these days. Bencic and Rybakina have retired in their last matches. Swiatek would be an interesting opponent these days. Emma could play Fernandez again. The last player to beat Emma is injured that is Tauson. If she plays like the US Open players will struggle to get a set of Emma.

In my case its the unknown - the us open so was so out of the blue, no one really knows what to expect , its extreme speculation in a situation which is really unique. My instinct is to say it wont be a smooth ride for that reason.

whatever we all believe personally , I am sure we will all get what actually happens wrong , for better or worse!

Good points, maybe its the British caution, ha.
