Week 40 - WTA1000 Indian Wells, USA Hard

Katie was broken for 3-5*, broke back and held for 5-5*, but was broken again for 5-7.

Often been a slow starter but she does need to get going here. Should be beating the youngster.

*1-2 in the second set.

Well that was a thoroughly deserved win for the youngster 5-7 2-6 cry.

The first 7 games went pretty quickly and were all pretty comfortable holds, but from *3-4 it did feel like she was constantly holding, on and never really got close to breaking bar the one game she managed to. Pretty dominant display really.

And lost 6-2 in the second.

I think Katie needs some time out to get herself healthy and possibly a new coach and structure to her season next year. The talent is there but she doesn't seem able to grasp her opportunities right now for whatever reasons/

If I were a nasty person and didn't like Bates, I'd say I bet Jeremy is currently all hyped up at being Emma's coach (even if temporary) and he's probably barely giving Katie a look-in.

Good job I'm not that person......

She probably may as well play the W60 event next week to combine the two, and make her long trip more worthwhile, but after that, it wouldn't be the worst idea. I bet that top 100 is looking so far away from her perspective at the moment, but hopefully she will get back there in time.

That's a decent shout. I just think something isn't quite right at the moment. She has the game for the top100 but as you say it seems a way off right now.

Raducanu working with Bates this week. Which is a little upsetting...

Wonder why she couldn't have kept the same coaching system for the rest of the season. Not sure Bates is the right match for her right now.

Im afraid that the best I can say about this result from Katies perspective is disappointing..

Agreed, the less said the better methinks....

With all the Emma stuff that's been going on, I've forgotten the grind that goes on at this level, and the winning or losing to the next up and coming player.

Gutted for Katie, but I guess that that's the world of tennis, and what most players have to go through to get even a half way decent career.

Main draw is out, but not fully released, so just snippets here and there.

Emma will face either Osorio Serrano or Sasnovich in R2, and possibly Halep in R3 if they both win their respective opening (R2) matches. Halep starts against either Kostyuk or Zhang. That's probably enough for now, but Kvitova or Azarenka would be the projected 4th round seeds.

From the pic on twitter, which is tough to read, it looks like Heather plays Sloane Stephens, while Emma awaits the winner of Osorio Serrano and Sasnovich. I guess the draw will appear eventually.

The seeds in Emma's section are Halep, then Kvitova/Azarenka, Svitolina/Cirstea/Mertens/Pegula, then Swiatek/Bencic/Pavlychenkova/Rybakina/Fernandez/3 more

Gutted for Katie, thought she had a great chance to make the MD. She claimed to be healthy before the tournament which makes the result even more worrying.

I hope Bates doesn't have a malign influence on Emma's game, he certainly doesn't seem to be doing Katie any good at the moment.

Q1: BOULTER, Katie (GBR) 20 157 lost to BRANTMEIER, Reese (USA) WC 757  5-7 2-6

R1: RADUCANU, Emma (GBR) WC 17 22 =CH v Bye
R1: WATSON, Heather (GBR) 57 (CH=38 2015) v STEPHENS, Sloane (USA) 73 (CH=3 2018)
They have played 7 times with Heather winning 5. However the last time they played was five years ago.

What has Jeremy Bates actually achieved as a coach?
