Week 39 - (ITF W25) - Pretoria, South Africa Hard

Matilda was 4-0 up, distributing the ball well.

Didn't see the first break back but in the second one, Isabella played some really excellent tennis.

Now back on serve.... 4-3*

ADD: and then played a pretty awful game to allow Matilda to break again and serve for the set

ADD 2: which she does very nicely, winning to 15, and in style.

6-3

She was 1-4 down, I think, in that second set but bounced back to win it 6-4

Some nice confident play

Yes, *1-4 down. Long game to hold serve for 4-4, but through in just over two hours. Onwards and upwards !

Wins 6-3 6-4. Good comeback - I checked the score and it was 1-4 *15-40 in the second, so assumed it was going 3 sets, checked back a bit later and she had game point to get it back level, so caught the final couple on the stream.

It could well be another Kruger in R2 for her as well.

Watched most of this and thought she played really well.

R1: MUTAVDZIC, Matilda (GBR) Q 718 def KRUGER, Isabella (RSA) WC 647 6-3 6-4

R2: MUTAVDZIC, Matilda (GBR) Q 718 =CH {17yo JCH=12} v KRUGER, Zoe (RSA) WC 687 (CH=526 2019)

Are the Krugers sisters, if so Zoe is the elder of the two?

I''m pretty sure they are sisters. They both have instagram pages, and are in joint pictures.

That's 39 points Matilda has earned in the last 3 weeks ( 15,15 and 9 so far this week ). Takes her from WR 829 with 29 points on 20/09 to going to be top 600 with at least 68 points in the post Indian Wells 18/10 rankings.

Of course relatively weak 25Ks but well targetted by Matilda, plenty matches and good consistent results. Chance now to push on for at least 15 points again with another QF which would then have her provisionally GB #16.

Incidentally I see that the live-tennis site continues to take off 50% of 2020 ITF tournament points in its projections ( so no doubt wrongly taking 5 points off Matilda ) while the WTA rankings haven't been reducing 2020 ITF tournament points at all so live-tennis has to rejig with each rankings update.

Got to 4-2*, but then pegged back to 4-4. Broken at the end of the set for 5-7.
One hour gone .........

Edit:- typo in score (honest !)

She was also 4-2 up so won 4 games in a row, but then lost the next 3. I've watched parts of it and it must be pretty windy, there have been a couple of wild errors from both.

Matilda does have the early break in the second, and a couple of game points to consolidate it.

Matilda takes a very quick second set 6-1, didn't see any of it, but no game beyond 30 points. She's serving first in the decider.
