Week 39 - WTA500 Chicago, USA Hard

Watched from 2-2 in 2nd set. Depressing viewing. Harriet brings so few weapons that she is reliant on errors from her opponent just to win points.

Yes, pretty depressing. Harriet has got to sort her serve out, her percentage is far too low. She didn't make a single first serve in the crucial 7th game of the second set, and she was below 50% for the whole match.

She must ( surely ) have put in much work and sought much advice re that serve of hers. Keep on searching though, Harriet.

In general, with her lack of weapons, she has done really well to get where she has in singles. I think though that she will need to find rather more to her game if she is ever to crack the top 100.

I think 80 to 100 is attainable but probably no higher unless she can get more on her serve from somewhere but she knows that I'm sure

On her day she can beat top 100 players. I can't see her breaking top 100 though. That serve!

Not a bad loss for Harriet - would have been amazed if was closer. Given where she is she has to accept these draws and still keep battling.

The commentator was saying she s only once won 2 MD matches successfully at a full tour level event. Her opponent was error prone, but hit way more winners.
most notably on serve. Still holds those 2 wins this year against US open finalist s though, ha.

Hontuma the Japanese who unexpectedly beat Harriet in the FQR and then defeated Garcia and was then given a w/o by Kontaveit leads Rogers 3-0.

Another upset perhaps?

Kontaveit won in Ostrava over the weekend, so I was surprised she was playing.

Hontuma has the first set 6-4

Mai Hontama looked pretty competent to me, and motivated; which might have been the decisive factor in her victory over Shelby Rogers.

In 2021, Hontama has won $51,334 in prize money, while Rogers has made $960,360, going into Chicago.

During their respective careers, Hontama has made $94K, Rogers $3,890,223

Mai wanted the win far more than Shelby, though Shelby did get annoyed with herself after some of her worst errors.

And for those interested in the number of instagram followers, Mai Hontama has 1,837. The WTA don't know how old she is but google thinks she's 22.

Muguruza beat Hontama 6-3 6-2 in the QF. As if some qualifier was going to beat Shelby Rogers in the last 16 and go on to win the title, ha

Again that would be rather galling!

Muguruza has reached the final by a bye in the 1st round, 2 easy wins and 2 walk overs. An easy week. Azarenka has given Muguruza 2 walk overs in 2021.

Nice 'work' if you can get it. At least $50K and 305 ranking points for reaching the final. And in the other SF Rybakina has retired in the second set vs Jabeur.

Also potentially very useful WTA race points and hence bigger riches for both Muguruza and Jabeur.
