R1: WATSON, Heather (GBR) 64lost to CIRSTEA, Sorana (ROU) 4 39 1-6 3-6
R1: BOULTER, Katie (GBR) Q 171 (CH=82 2019) v ZAVATSKA, Katarina (UKR) 135 (CH=103 2020)
They played in 2019 with Katie winning 7-5 in the third.
It is not unusual for Ms. Watson to go out in the first round of a tournament. It is the norm. For the last few years, Ms. Watson has survived on a few good tournaments a year.
Does anybody know who, if anybody, was coaching her at this tournament?
Watching Katie playing now, I'm not sure she would get a game off Emma.
Absolutely no point comparing them right now and particularly not in the 1st few games of any Katie Boulter. She's notoriously slow out of the blocks, takes a while for her to wake up

I'm sure you are right. I felt a bit bad after making the comment but having watched no other matches but Emma's since Wimbledon the contrast was rather glaring to me.
I seem to have reverse jinxed her anyway now

Katie missed a set point at 5-3*, was broken to love at *5-4, broke again, missed two more set points at *40-15, won an absolute lung buster at deuce, and finally dragged herself over the line. Well done.
Not watching it but great that she's scraped the first set.
Would be nice if she could manage to not make it such a long-drawn out battle - she has the attack weapons, if only someone would give her the confidence to use them - you slightly fear for her otherwise
