Week 37 - Challenger 80 (€44,820) - Open Blot, Rennes, France (indoor hard)

Nice work Liam, keep it up.

I entirely fail to understand the machinations of seedings and ranking points so will gracefully exit the room.......

Good to see a very "run of the mill" win there by Liam.  Let's hope both him and Andy go deep this week.  A meet-up in the final perhaps.biggrin

Why wasnt Liam seeded ahead of Barrere?

Presumably because of their respective rankings at the time of entry.

It's the rankings from the *Monday of the week before tournaments that count towards seedings ( in this case Monday 30/08 with the 2 week gap caused by the US Open ) rather than the entry date rankings or the rankings from the Monday of the tournament week ( which will often not be out before the main draw is due out, especially on fhe WTA side lately! ).

On Monday 30/08 Liam was WR 147 and Barrere WR 136.

*Just the odd exceptions at times with late in the week starters such as Indian Wells and Miami.

Andy to the press

'One of the goals between now and the end of the year is to make a big improvement in my ranking, and to do that I need to be competing often.

'I still feel like I can play at a very high level, but if all of the time when I go to the big tournaments I'm playing top players right at the beginning of the events, it is not so easy. So I need to try to improve my ranking to avoid situations like that.

'Right now I feel good. The few weeks I had over in America, I felt good each week, which this year I've not really at many points felt good for like three, four, five, six weeks in a row.

'So that's why I'm here to compete and I'm going to try to play as many tournaments as I can between now and the end of the year while my body feels good.'

Murray has also been given a wildcard into the ATP event in San Diego later this month.

So, it looks like Rennes, Metz, San Diego, Indian Wells (hopefully) and then a few of Moscow/Antwerp (probably not as straight after IW); St Petersburg/Vienna (probably Vienna if he can?); Paris (probably); Stockholm (not sure if he would play this?) and that is then the season done.

Unless he plays more Challengers, but it looks like to me we could have him trying to play 6 or 7 events before year end, including this week

Andy 2-6 *2-3

A danger of rather a spanner in the works of his optimism.

Second set look more promising after the first went down 6-2 .
Andy takes it to 3 all.
Safiulllin anyone ? Not a player I'm familiar with.

Now even stevens, with Andy taking the second set by 6-4, so maybe he's got his eye back in.

Safiullin is a regular on the Futures circuit.

Or rather was. He has evidently only played challengers and above since May 2019. He's been top 200 since February 2020.

I think that it needs to be time for Andy to retire and I hate saying this because I know he wants to do this but what enjoyment can he be getting from this.
