Paralympic Wheelchair Tennis 2021 - Tokyo

And Gordon Reid is a star as well - it is such a shame they play each other tomorrow, can't they split the medal??

GB is currently 5th in medals table for tennis. If Jordanne and Lucy lose , we will end up 4th. If they win, we would be 2nd.

But this will be a tough ask, it really will.

Very pleased for Jordanne - who I think is calling it a day soon - to get her first singles medal, and I would say slightly unexpected too. And a chance for a gold tomorrow. Excellent.

That will be gutting for Alfie & Gordan, and probably their last chance with Alfie getting unclassified (or declassified).

Is it this season that is Alfies last? So harsh really, if you cant play wheelchair tennis , it implies you are able enough to play with Dan, Cam and the rest, which clearly isnt the case for Alfie.

Hope he has a last month or two of success in US Open, World Team Cup and NEC Masters.

 Is he able to walk?

"The 23-year-old, who was diagnosed with Perthes Disease at the age of six, is currently permitted to continue until the end of 2021 and determined to remain positive as he awaits the outcome of a review into the situation."

Perthes disease is a rare childhood condition affecting the hip joint. Bone in the ball (femur head) part of the ball and socket hip joint dies from lack of blood supply. When the blood supply returns, a new femoral head forms. Treatments include time/observation, drugs, physical therapy, casting and surgery.
From the TImes

"Hewett has Perthes disease, a rare condition that affects his hip and means he can walk only short distances. Unable to play tennis on his feet, he has established a successful career on the wheelchair circuit by winning five grand-slam singles and 11 grand-slam doubles titles."

What an epic and Gordon wins bronze 7-5 in 3rd set.

Well done to him!

So Jordanne and Gordon both win silvers and bronze medals, Alfie and Lucy both get silvers in the doubles .

Ah, well done Gordon! Shame at the expense of Alfie.
Do hope there will be a way for Alfie to continue........

It does seem bizzare that they are not letting Alfie play any more. It's not like they are moving him to a separate category, he literally can't play tennis now. I thought the Paralympics was about inclusivity.
