Counting Montreal and Cincinnati and Heather's retirement in Chicago that makes 13 different players who have retired or given a walkover having started the tournament. Why is this happening and are we going to see similar numbers at the US Open ?

It must be the heat but Blinkova retiring after only 1 game in Cleveland makes it 14 different players retring/giving a walkover. Perhaps they should promote tennis in Iceland in July and August as at least it would not be so hot.

Gumulya was atrocious and Emily wasn't much better. Out 6-0 6-1. 6 deuce points, won only 1 of them. Huge swing against you when converting that poorly. Totally changes the match dynamic to even that up.
Eden on in the very early hours.

Although a quick look through the mens events at Atlanta, Washington , Toronto and Cinci shows just 2 withdrawals or retirements (the Japanese Nishioka and Nishikori) so not sure the men are struggling like the women appear to be.
There is a 1st round match between Venus Williams and Su Wei Hsieh. Bearing in mind how many years both ladies have been playing, remarkably this is the 1st singles meeting between them.
At least the match was played without any retirements. Hsieh won easily in 2 sets.

Some pretty brutal scorelines against Em lately. I'm not sure that this partnership has legs.
Good for her to play at this level ( and there may be much fewer opportunities in the future, as her remaining big points, largely earned with Sofia Shapatava, are older ) but I am sure not as enjoyable as she would like.

It's a shame that Sofia has stopped playing doubles to concentrate on singles, as they were a good partnership. Gumulya doesn't look anywhere as good as her ranking suggests, and is having an adverse effect on Emily's game (eg netting three volleys in a single game). Emily really needs to find a partner that she can gel with, and quickly too as the run of losses since Nottingham is growing rapidly.
... against Ana Bogdan, who in turn has retired 5-7 1-3 down to Varvara Gracheva. Yet another one.
This is the 3rd retirement in this tournament. Continuing this unfortunate theme Cleveland has one retirement and one walkover so the total for Montreal/Cincinnati/Cleveland/Chicago is a total of 17 different players either retiring/giving walkovers.
