A few wins for Jo here are important , Heather could well take over as British number one post the US Open, looking at the 5 week rankings points on live tennis. Interesting few weeks .
If anyone takes over as British no.1 from Jo one hopes it is Emma. Emma has a 4th round Wimbledon in her CV this year. Jo has a WTA title this year. In the BJK cup Heather lost on home ground to a lowly ranked Mexican and was bailed out by Katie Boulter's wins. I don't think Heather is really British one based on the perforomances of the other 3.
but its all about points , Rosamund, regardless of how we feel , and Heather could well take it on points , deserved or not- and soon. Shes currently standing as number one on the 5 week ranking predictions on live tennis
Agreed it is about points and in particular the Grand Slams. One of the reasons why Laura reached no. 27 in the world was because she had a 4th round in the US 2012 and Wimbledon 2013 and 3rd round Australian Open 2013. I can see Jo dropping points particularly as she has points from 2019 still counting but unless Heather wins Chicago where are her points coming from? Is she eventually going to win a match in the US Open ?
Sorry but, as pointed out, while the Slams have most points, Heather could well shortly be ranked GB #1 even still without winning a US Open match or any other match within the next few weeks. She may not seem the #1 but that's down to Jo losing previous Cinci and US Open points and the maths.
Exactly - heather doesnt even need to turn up and she could take over top spot from Jo, if Jo fails to win a match or even play.

Really helps illustrate how completely messed up the rankings are right now. Heather, for eg, is sat on a load of points that she probably wouldn't have defended from nearly 18 months ago if her season's form is anything to go by. Quite why players playing regularly on the WTA ciscuit are still keeping half their points from ITF tournaments is a bit beyond me as well.
In this year's race the WTA website currently has the following
62nd with 592 points Jo
105th with 296 points Heather
123rd with 242 points Emma
125th with 238 points Harriet
128th with 232 points Katie B
So is Emma more likely to catch Heather than Heather is to catch Jo in this year's race?
The WTA race points only count WTA tour events, ie. not ITFs or even WTA 125 series such as the current Chicago event. It mainly exists for selecting the WTA tour finals competitors ( well when the WTA tour finals are held! )
So for instance, Emma's 242 points are just her Wimbledon 240 points plus two 1s. Her ITF 100K+H points from last week are not included, and neither will her points from this week's Chicago WTA 125 be added to her race points.
So the race just really acts as a more valuable future predictor for WTA rankings comparisons at the very top level, where just WTA tour events are involved, and indeed the diversity is even bigger just now with the old ranking counters and half counters due to covid.
Shame for Jo, but I thought it was strange that yesterday she was still on her 'road trip' between events on her Instagram but was on the schedule for today. Shame as that was a soft draw to get more court time and wins.

Not sure where she was heading for on the road trip. Cleveland or New York? Samsonova might have proved a difficult opponent in the 2nd round.
In the mens event in WS, apparently Noah Rubin didnt get first round $ when he replaced and lost instead of Nick K. He got qualifiers $. Is it the same for WTA or can Tara hope for a good pay day?
