Week 34 - WTA250 Cleveland, USA Hard

I hope Emma DOESN'T become GB number one just yet - it is too early in her career, and will add pressure when she is still finding her way on tour.

The WTA site shows Trevisan now playing Shuai Zhang, so Jo must have withdrawn

If Jo doesnt play US Open as well, live rankings suggests she will fall to 1124 points post US Open, Heather wouldnt need to play and would be 1129. And would take over number one spot after US Open. Someone closer to rankings will no doubt confirm or knock that down!

A few wins for Jo here are important , Heather could well take over as British number one post the US Open, looking at the 5 week rankings points on live tennis. Interesting few weeks .

If anyone takes over as British no.1 from Jo one hopes it is Emma. Emma has a 4th round Wimbledon in her CV this year. Jo has a WTA title this year. In the BJK cup Heather lost on home ground to a lowly ranked  Mexican and was bailed out by Katie Boulter's wins. I don't think Heather is really British one based on the perforomances of the other 3.

but its all about points , Rosamund, regardless of how we feel , and Heather could well take it on points , deserved or not- and soon. Shes currently standing as number one on the 5 week ranking predictions on live tennis

Agreed it is about points and in particular the Grand Slams. One of the reasons why Laura reached no. 27 in the world was because she  had a 4th round in the US 2012 and Wimbledon  2013 and 3rd round Australian Open 2013. I can see Jo dropping points particularly as she has points from 2019 still counting but unless Heather wins Chicago where are her points coming from?   Is she eventually going to win a match in the US Open ?

It may just be coincidence but all of Cleveland's featured (promoted) players have now withdrawn (Riske, Pegula, Brady and Jo)

We're told, Jo's philosophy is to always give her best in every match, so it probably doesn't enter her match play psyche. Jo has currently shown good performance, so the worrying issue is her injury status which we can't predict. It will be what it will be.

Why is British no1 too early for Emma?.Laura was British no1 at a younger age and had reached the top 60 younger than Emma  is now. It looks like Jo's career is coming to an end soon so Emma hopefully can take over before not too long.

Have you noticed how much Shuai Zhang has impacted on British tennis in recent months. She seems to play every week.Jo beat her to win Nottingham, and she retired in  her match against  Heather at Birmingham. She then beat Emma in the much hyped match in San Jose. Then she played Jo again retiring in her match in Montreal. Now she has been moved in the  main draw in Cleveland  to Jo's place when Jo pulled out. She also won the doubles in Cincinnati with Sam Stosur.

Unless there is another Covid episode like Wimbledon it is hard to imagine Jo not playing in the US Open. Even with bad knees you can imagine her playing. She played in the 2020 iAustralIan Open when because of her right knee I don't think she was anywhere near her best. How many of these points for Jo and Heather relate to 2019?.Based on 2021 Jo  still has a lead over Heather. Neither have got enough points from 2021 alone to make the main draw of the Austrailan Open assuming it takes place. Will Jo retire soon ?

As much as I loved Laura - I do hope Emma has a longer playing career

Agreed. It wasn't the young age that did for Laura. It was the wrist injury immediately after reaching the last 16 of Wimbledon 2013.

Being no. 1 in the UK is hardly a big deal. Well, once a year, at Wimbly time it is, but there's not much tennis coverage otherwise and we have lots of other worldclass athletes, many of them young, for her to share the burden with

i.e. far more difficult for Caroline Woz say in Denmark. Or even Marco Bagdhatis in Cyprus. Or - especially - Ons Jabeur, for instance. Or any other of a heap of national number ones in smallish countries where the player might be practically the only global household name in sport.

One imagines the same applies for Greece with Tsitsipas and Sakkari. In Sakkari's  case she had a match point to reach a Grand Slam final.

Sorry but, as pointed out, while the Slams have most points, Heather could well shortly be ranked GB #1 even still without winning a US Open match or any other match within the next few weeks. She may not seem the #1 but that's down to Jo losing previous Cinci and US Open points and the maths.

The reasons for concern over Emma are becoming quite varied and in my view generally unfounded.

May she keep developing her game and fitness AND winning and if and when that takes her ro GB #1, then fine.
