For many players, the grand slam qualis are pretty much life and death in terms of financial security.
The money there dwarfs other events.
However, Emma's not one of those players. She's receiving top LTA support. And will do so for years.
Far better for her to have made the final (and maybe win the final) of a WTA event.
She may do well in qualis next week too. (Hope so) Or not. It doesn't really matter.
The learning experience of what she's done this week is huge, especially for some one (poor girl) who's going to have that panic attack round her neck like an albatross for ages (when it might be the only time it's ever happened, connected to something else as well, no real different from how other players suddenly tighten up and can't play, whatever, and even if not, well, it's something she'll be working on, like her volleys, all part of the big package).
I'm hoping her and Clara will be names we'll be seeing on the big stage for many years to come.
They're both the same age, lovely characters, perfect for the next Gen. The fact that Clara has squeaked into the MD at the US Open and Emma is outside is just how the cards fell this year, given Emma's lack of traveling to play ranking events (which shows sense). Things will look very different next year.
Emma has already earned decent prize money this week. The aim for any player is to get into the top 100 and thus get the guaranteed prize money from the grand slams.
This week will bump her a good move up the rankings and any success next week will be a bonus.
The aim is to break into the top 100 as you cannot make any significant money on the challenger/ITF circuit.
Yes, but my point was that Emma has the guaranteed £80k pa from the LTA. Which will last a long time, given her age.
As well as a guaranteed MD Wimbly WC next year, and lots of other wildcards, no doubt
So her need to break into the top 100 - as a number one goal just for money - is not the same as many other players.
She has a career path to look at, not her bank coffers.
As such, her team may well be very happy with jeopardising the US qualis in the quest for the WTA title.
Her performance and popularity with US crowds this week should help her get more Wildcards, though surely on current form she won't need one for Wimbledon next year?

Indeed. I agree. I meant she has a guaranteed one if she needs one. So paulisi's point about "The aim for any player is to get into the top 100 and thus get the guaranteed prize money from the grand slams " only applies to three out of the four grand slams (and not even to them in my mind, because she doesn't need that guaranteed prize money to carry on at the moment and so her career path can be her focus (although, mind you, the two are going hand in hand and she'll likely be top 100 pretty soon, of course, but it's hardly a problem for her if she fails to make the cut for the Aussie OPen say).

I would imagine the off field endorsements surely coming her way will greatly outnumber this amount.
A great week for her. It is a tough tour out there and it is a real positive she has shown she can compete at a decent level in consecutive weeks. Not far off 19 years old now so after balancing her tennis and school it is a good thing to get out there playing on a regular basis. It is after all what the tour is about.
As much as it would be good to qualify for the US open I think the off season will be more key to her immediate future career. Time to address aspects of her game and in particular her overall stamina and fitness.
