Is it just me or does Harriet's serve have a little bit more pop on it than it used to? I thought that watching the Wimbledon mixed and also a couple of points from last night.
I think it is just you. Watched the 2nd set and Harriet and Leylah both have similarly paced 1st serves, mid to high 150's but on the 2nd serve Leylah was serving mid 130km/h, Harriet about 30km/h less. I think she is going to have to stop fearing double faults and just go for it because losing close to 50km/h between 1st and 2nd serve is giving her a huge mountain to climb. Maybe a good philosophy would be that if she is serving a high proportion of 1st serves in a match then really going for her 2nd serve would not be too detrimental and she can see where it takes her. Certainly if she does play her 2nd round match against Bianca, she has nothing to lose by trying to hit 2 x 1st serves occasionally, she already has 90 points in the bag and no one is expecting her to win.
I guess though, as emmsie indicates, to go for a 1st serve on 2nd serve, Harriet really needs to be serving fairly accurately with her actual 1st serve, and against Leylah it was 49% (39/80) accurate, and overall her second serve was more successful than her first, counting being in and then winning the point.
1st : (39/80) x (30/39) = 37.5% 2nd: (37/41) x (18/37) = 43.9%
That just looks at the Leylah match though, where essentially she has clearly got away with it. I haven't looked back previously, and so it may be rather misleading. I can imagine many players, eg. Bianca, would not let her have anything like just short of 50% success when landing that 2nd serve in and 43.9% success overall allowing for DFs.
100kmh, what around 60mph? Thats way below acceptable pro level to be honest. Even for a second serve.
Yep, most 2nd serves were around the 105km/h mark. I guess if you are playing someone who depends on pace being generated off the serve to hit a great return then a slow 2nd serve isn't a disaster and placement/spin can be added to make the serve a little tougher but her 2nd serves were falling mid court. She clearly can hit a fairly decent paced serve because her 1st serve pace was pretty consistently 153-159 as was Fernandez but she just takes way too much off the 2nd serve every time. I don't think I saw a 2nd serve over 106km/h at all.

I think her 1st serve would have to be operating at 70% or thereabouts for her to be able to hit 2 x 1st serves or atleast take a bit less off her 2nd. Seems to be a confidence thing rather than an ability issue. I think if I was her I'd leave it as it is for the matches likely to be competitive and go for it when playing higher quality players where that 2nd serve is going to be destroyed and she doesn't have that much to lose. Tonights match would be the kind of match I'd be saying, just go for it and don't worry about the DF count.
Harriet playing well! She doesn't have a big game, but she plays smart and consistently - really nice to see when she goes for it. Her groundies seem to have a little more power on them.
