I thought Naomi could have been vulnerable early(er), but while I haven't seen any of her matches with all of them starting around 3am, I thought only losing 10 games in her frist two matches was a good sign, and Golubic has been doing quite well this year, so thought she could have given her a test if she was rusty.
Rybakina has just won her match, so the final 8 in singles are:
[13] Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (ROC) vs [9] Belinda Bencic (SUI)
[15] Elena Rybakina (KAZ) vs [7] Garbiñe Muguruza (ESP)
Camila Giorgi (ITA) vs [4] Elina Svitolina (UKR)
Paula Badosa (ESP) vs Markéta Vondrouová (CZE)

got to fancy a Spanish winner here now, my instinct - but as always, it really is anyones to win...Svitolina, for example, must fancy her chances, but none of them need to be worried, they could all do this!
I see Bencic is also left in the womens doubles last 8 as well, two events left for her to try and get a medal in.
So, we have Bencic v Rybakina and Svitolina v Vondrousova in the semis and for the medals.
For all 4 of them this is going to be a big deal, for the East Europeans it is going to be ahead of a slam. Tumainyi Caryol wrote an interesting article in the Guardian yesterday where he argued strongly that history and politics makes the Olympics , even in tennis, something that is higher than a slam for most Eastern European players and that helps explain why they do so well, ie they take it seriously.

Only Vondrousova has ever played in a Grand Slam singles final. The only Eastern European to win it in the past was Dementieva in 2008. Previous winners in Graf, Capriati, Davenport, Venus, Henin and Serena looked like a Who's Who of Grand Slam winners. Kerber let the side down in losing to Puig in 2016. They get no ranking points which may trouble some players. From a British point of view it's a shame the Olympics have come too soon for Emma. Our prospects for 2024 Olympics are not going to be rosy with Paris on clay.

I wonder if Vondrousova who Emma beat easily at Wimbledon is going to win the Olympic gold medal.? Purely by coincidence Jo beat Monica Puig at Wimbledon in 2016 and Puig went on to win the 2016 Olympic singles .

I have To say, Gameover, your stats are always fascinating !
Incredible scenes in the women's doubles as the completely unfancied Brazilian team of Stefani & Pigossi - only in the tournament at the last minute - claim the bronze medal, winning 11-9 in the MTB after being 5-9 down. Stefani's excellent net play combined well Pigossi's back court strengths.

Not quite as Belinda Bencic beat Vondrousova in 3 sets.
