2021 GB Player of the Month Thread Jul to Dec

4th title of season for Paul and 3rd of month for Ali. This RU vote
Could be interesting . If it wasnt for Emmas win, it would be a worthy PoM vote in its own right.

I assume we are still for now doing the Emma annointing thing for this month. I've been thinking about that ...

Personally I think we should have a vote between her and the "RU" winner. Yes, yes, I know what the result will be but what's the harm? Unanamous would be a first and really intriguing would be if it wasn't unanamous. If it's 30-0 then it's 30-0 and PoM history making in a month with some other fine achievements.

I feel that it would be an unnecessary precedent. We have said elsewhere that PoM / PoS are to do with votes, and generally not necessarily the level of the wins.

A sensible separate vote excluding Emma is due to take place for "RU" to try and avoid an anomalous tactical RU. But let Emma ( or someone else?! ) have the final votes.

I nominate Emma to take part in a run-off against the winner of the vote without Emma

Firstly apologies this is floating around a little. We are dealing with an unusual situation!

To confirm the plan- in honour of her winning the US Open, Emma Raducanu will receive a bye through to the final 2 vote this month. All other nominated players will have an initial vote off whereby the winner of that vote (no fifty percent threshold) will then go head to head with Emma. The winner of that final vote will be player of the
Month.

I had originally suggested giving Emma the recognition without a vote off and simply voting for second , but this process above works fine.

No more changes and narrative changed in nominations posts to clarify .

Ha. I womdered if we should also put JoKo into that play off vote or maybe a pre semifinal against Emma?

sound good?

With all due respect Jon I thought this was a forum supporting British players. I don't think anybody connected  with Jo would find this very funny.

It was a little joke given our earlier discussions. Lighten up - I suspect Jo would have smiled in fact. But Ive deleted it to save any sensitivities.

I will try. Having said that I  do not think anybody should be individually in a poll against Emma. I would expect a 100%win for Emma.

Like it or not, no British player, man or woman, has matched Jo Konta's achievements over the last 6 years or so, other than Andy Murray. The reality is she converted a lot of people in this country just to watch women's tennis, myself included. Witness the record 7.4 million people who tuned in to watch her QF against Simona Halep at Wimbledon 2017. It could have been much more had she not had to fight against xenophobic and gender bigotry and make her way in Andy Murray's shadow with very little establishment support. But all of Jo's anguish has not been totally in vain as it's paved the way for Emma and at least some of the "hype" surrounding Emma will be to ensure she does fall into the same traps.

As for this thread, it looks very bad that Jo's title at Nottingham was not recognised, if only because of its significance in British tennis and her achieving it in the light of her fight with knee injury.

 Very bad, really?

I have gone back to the June poll, which this seems to be about.

https://britishtennis.activeboard.com/t67699851/june-2021-player-of-the-month-poll/

Jo came 3rd but got 4 out of 31 votes cast. Katie got several times as many votes. NO ONE at the time of the poll commented that this looked bad on us or wrote to provide support and the like for Jo.

Which is a shame. I am assuming you and Gameover voted for Jo, TT Man, 2 other folks it seems as well - which is great. I am sorry it looks so bad on the other 27 folks who voted for someone else.

TTMan, for the purposes of the June PoM vote, as has been said Jo was nominated and again as said Katie Swan was voted the June winner.

If you or any others can't at least see the argument that a vote in that month for Katie S seems not at all unreasonable, without being at all anti Jo, then there is little more I can think to add re that one.

Jon has clearly put in great efforts to introduce a range of objective categories to get into the final of the 2021 Player of the Season vote - meaning that while the voting is very much subjective, with a range of things that attract people's votes, who then qualifies for the Player of the Season vote from PoM winners and RUs and the various other ways is objectively open and clear.

One category to get into the PoS vote is GB women's singles #1 ranked and Jo did hold that position. But no longer. So as things stand she currently doesn't qualify for the finals. And there it is.

Gee, this should be fun !

Really?

TT Man, her title WAS recognised - she was nominated for player of the month.

BUT other people had claim to it too.

As Jon posted:

"I was torn between Alfie, Cam, JoKo and Eva."

And he ended up voting for Alfie.

So are you saying that Joh voting for Alfie was gender bigotry? Maybe your not voting for Alfie was disability bigotry?

You might note that Katie Swan won. No gender bigotry. Probably because - like me - it was because Wimbly qualis was the main thing people had watched on TV - I really enjoyed her run (and it's lovely she did so well, after all the injuries she's had - and I know Jo has had nasty injuries too but at least she's already been 4th in the world, so it's not like her injuries have completely stymied her career).

It doesn't look 'very bad' that some people voted for Alfie, some for Katie, some for Jo, some for whomever they fancied, one evening, with a glass in hand, and can't really remember (that's me - I remember voting for Hannah Klugman once but, honestly, most of the time, I can't remember who I voted for.....)

I also note that I'm slightly more likely to vote for someone who did well in the second half of the month or at the end of the month - it makes no sense, of course, but I like to vote for someone I've really enjoyed watching and it's simply that it's more fresh in my mind at the end of the month - a reflection of my mind, perhaps, but there you go....
