Week 26 - Wimbledon - London (grass) - Women's Doubles

The early break of Martincova's serve was enough. First set won 6-3

Early break again of Martincova's serve, but in the end Beth failed to serve it out, and they lost the tie-break 7-5

Such a shame.

Emily's interception choices haven't been great.

So, so close in that set.

Can't think they've got a huge chance now.....But you never know.....

Was Beth particularly culpable for it not being served out on her serve?  ( edit : and I see that CD mention Em's interception choices. I only saw the last couple of points of the TB myself )

I think they may have led in the TB too?

No, not particularly, but could have been better (score was *5-4 and broken to 15). Tie break was *5-3

Beth has played very well, in general, but yes, she did play a tight game when she served for it, and the couple of faults were costly.

Em also has played very well (they wouldn't have nearly won otherwise) but she gets caught at the net, moving over, not intercepting, getting caught down the line, then intercepting when she probably shouldn't.

Still some excellent play though....

There is a horrible accident during Sam's mixed match. One of the ball kids has slipped and looks like she has broken her ankle. Really awful to watch. She is being stretchered off

Oh dear, that's nasty. There does seem to be a greater number of slips this year.

I did wonder why the scoreboard appeared to be frozen

Reminded me of the Battek- Sands fall a few years ago. That's how bad it was. Hope she recovers well

Missed Emily's match yesterday so avoided the score and watched it on catch-up. Really thought they were going to make it, they did so well to get to a set and 5-3* considering the pressure they were under (think they had saved 12 break points up to that point). Unfortunately after a great serve to start the game Beth got very nervous and her arm looked like led and she kept netting. But they really should have broken in the next game and given themselves another shot.

Tiebreak was a bit of a similar story, 0-3* to 5-3*. Beth lost all her service points. Credit for the fight in the third set to keep in touch right until the end.

I know the fact they played some brilliant stuff won't make it sting any less, but I hope they can reflect back on it in a couple of days. They really did play a heck of a good match, and if they hadn't been bringing such a high level early on it could have disappeared very quickly if the Czechs had taken any of their early chances.

It's something I have noticed with Beth - tightness at the end of a set. Also means that she hits the ball flatter, leaving little margin between netting and going long. But plenty of good play during the match, and I hope they get to play together again soon.

To be fair she hit a corker to start the game at *5-4, and the slice out wide on the second point was great too. It's just she made a bad choice going down the line to Martincova with her second shot, when I think swatting it cross back behind Vondrousova would have been the better play to get it either away or another high ball for them at the net. It was really only then she seemed to doubt herself and tighten up. I also wondered if Em misjudged Martincova's return at *5-5 in the breaker thinking it was going long, and that's why she left it? As from the TV angle it looked like one she should have taken, instead Beth ended up trading from the back and netting a few shots later. But who knows, none of that might have made any difference in the end.

I did like this pairing though. I've no idea what Em's plans are now as she comes up to her birthday. I really wanted her to get her 'moment' as pay back for all she has given in her career, especially with her parents there. With all the break points they were saving it felt like it was going to be their day right up until the end. But not to be, very very sadly.
