Analyst uses City skills to power his teen son to stardom
A financial analyst hopes his business acumen - and huge sacrifices - will help steer his teenage son to becoming a Wimbledon star.
Anton Matusevich's meteoric rise has seen him practising with British stars, including Kyle Edmund. Such is his promise that the 17-year-old, playing in the boys' singles event at Wimbledon this year for the first time, was handed a wildcard [sic] into the men's qualifying draw. Despite losing to 21-year-old Czech player, Zdenek Kolar, Anton's family believe he has what it takes to reach the top.
Anton Matusevich Snr, 44, who works for HSBC in the City, said he was using his business nous to help his son. He told The Standard: "I work in the City, so am used to analysing things and working out risk. I am good at setting out structure and getting conclusions. I was trying to engineer something that would make a positive impact on his life. I have also helped him with my own sports experience. The sacrifices we have had to make - like Judy Murray with Jamie and Andy. There is a lot that goes into it."
Anton, who is studying for A-levels in maths, further maths and economics, was born in New York after his father and mother, Kate, 43, moved from Russia in the mid-nineties. Last year, he was regarded as the best 16-year-old in the world, helped by an incredible fastest serve [sic] of 135mph.
From twitter, June 11th, video of Eva after winning the 18&U
@LTACompetitions
#JuniorNationalChampioships 18&U Girls Champion Eva Shaw said: Todays match was a tough fight but I thought I performed really well. In the first set she came out quite strong which put me under pressure but then I started to play some of my best tennis
@LTACompetitions #JuniorNationalChampionchips William Jansen, 18&U Boys Champion said: I went 3-1 up but then she came back and it was pretty tight throughout. I just dug in and pulled my way through it and fought for every point. It was an amazing match and Im just so happy to win.
Do we know if Anton and Will have ever met, maybe British Tour? Or Eva and Gorgodze!? Presumably not
Re Anton and Will, no idea but there's three years between them so there's a good chance they haven't had an official match. I would have thought they might have been in training together at some time but - again - three years is a big differences so they might have been in separate groups.
Also, I'm not sure if Will is one of the 'chosen few'.
Eva is part of the LTA's player pathway programme, at the Loughborough Academy, etc. That's very selective and quite a few of the boys refused to be part of the Loughborough/Stirling new academies.
But Will Jansen isn't even the LTA lists in 2018 and 2019 for invitations to NTC training groups - and those lists have about 200 players on, if not more. See:
Which suggests to me that he's not part of the LTA's groups, and is doing things his way. Which was also backed up by the feeling I got when I saw them at Surbiton - he had a team of two (or three) with him - which looked like a father and an American coach (although I wasn't that close).
In addition, the LTA interviews after the Nationals write that Eva is part of the programme, blah blah, but say nothing about Will in that regard. Not A1 sure, but based on that (and not much else) my impression is that he's doing it privately.
Anyway, someone on here who knows juniors will probably know a lot better than me .....
and good luck to him against Anton - happy whoever wins and clearly Anton has more chance to go farther in the event, but keen to see WIll make a good fist of it!
Our first Rags to riches player, Will Jansen , is underway - matching Anton so far, can he get a memorable, career high win, or will Anton pick up the baton from Will
Reached his career high just recently, he has won two clay court challengers this year and, indeed, all his career performances have been on clay. This is his first appearance on grass, certainly at Wimbledon. Indeed, he came straight off clay, winning the title in Aix-en-Provence last week onto the grass.
Clearly he is higher ranked but this is a real opportunity for Anton

From SC post on the tournie site! Well done Anton, and his progression continues and his journey on rags to riches. I would say he has got a new shirt now on that journey. SO who does he play in FQR, anyone know, and who will our challenger for the baton be??
I dont think the womens match of Gorgodze v Ahn is being played today, or have I misread the schedule??
