Week 23 - WTA 250 - Viking Open, Nottingham (grass)

It's rumoured on twitter that all the Chinese players are withdrawing from Wimbledon to prepare for the Olympics. That includes a few players in this draw. Anybody seen this ?

Tara's match is live on Unibet. They seem to have switched the stream off for Sam v Eden for some reason.

Thanks Ace. Despite the withdrawals I think it's an interesting draw. Jo surely has to get through that section. I rather fear for Heather though, I can see her losing to McHale.

Good opportunity for Harriet too, and Fran is in with a shout. Some good potential qualifier placements too for those that make it.

I think it does kind of have a glorified Surbiton ring to it, but yes, I like it too, and a good mix of familiar WTA players, decent prospects, and of course, an abundance of Brits.

Quite interesting to see the top 4 seeds - we all know Jo isn't in great form, and hopefully this is the chance to win back to back matches in an event for the first time in absolutely ages. The next two seeds love their grass, and Donna loves this event, but no wins for her since the AO (injuries), and Riske has no wins since the US Open, again massively plagued by injury, and then poor Zhang (if she is even playing) is 1-11 stretching back to the 2020 FO, very recently ending a 9 match losing streak, so the top 4 seeds aren't exactly brimming with confidence. The 5th seed Collins must have just lost in enough time to Serena yesterday to stay in the draw.

Quite torn between Emma and Harriet. I'd love Emma to win a match or two, and put herself right back into the Wimbledon convo, but Harriet probably has the better chance of an extended run - she did really well in pretty much all the W100s in 2018 (including beating then 15 y/o Emma in 3), and of course did well at Wimbledon last time. Really looking forward to that one, and assume the BBC will be prioritising it.

Stream back for Eden and Sam and it's a nice competitive grass court tussle. Eden up 4-3*

Tara played a poor first set but looking a bit better now. She had a point for *5-3 but the Italian held. *4-4 second set.

Tara saves three break points but not a fourth. The Italian has a lovely slice backhand which is working beautifully on the court today, really biting in deep.

4-5*

Yes Tara! Saves two match points beautifully from 4-6* down, has a set point but it's saved with a wonderful second serve ace from the Italian. But Tara demolishes a second serve return to get a second and takes it!

3-6 7-6(7) 0-0*

Great opportnities for some with 12 ranking points on offer for a win in the single qualifying round.

Wirh the 48 woman main draw it is 16 ponts for winning MD R1 match moving on to 30 points points for winning R2.

Eden closes out 7-6(4) 6-2. Well done to her, a big achievement.

Tara now playing some of the nice stuff we know is there but all too rarely see. She's up *4-1 in the third.

Bookies have Beth as slight favourite over Em which feels about right.

Naiktha on her way out. Usually someone 275/300 would get a wildcard into qualies for Wimbledon but I can see them making her go into pre-qualies to be honest.

Although she has just played a nice game to break and keep her out there a bit longer 2-6 *3-5

I think that Naiktha will be OK for a Wimbledon Q WC, I just don't see enough alternatives. But we shall see.

Well done to Eden, though I'd say it's high time that she was producing more on the singles front. Been relatively disappointing for the last couple of years or so against earlier expectations.

Tara plays a nice final set, saving a break point in the final game and taking her second match point.

Nice reception from the crowd. Have to say I've missed the quicker pace of matches on grass, it's nice to see points and games progressing speedily along!

I would have fancied Emma for it if she had a few more matches under her belt recently but Harriet will probably be the sharper of the two.
