Weeks 22 & 23 - French Open (Roland-Garros) - Paris, France (clay) - main draw

Just got back home and was going to watch Heather, but not worth it right now - blink and it'll be over, as they say.

Barty out, 1-6 2-2 RET to Linette. She didn't look convincing at all the other day vs Pera, had a MTO there, and another MTO here. Shame for her with it being her first time back in Paris since her triumph. I wonder if she'll have recovered in time for Wimbledon?

Pretty much all these women's R2 matches are ending in straight sets. Think it's something like 18 out of 21 thus far.

Although people have spent the last month rejecting Medvedev's comments about clay, because its the most difficult surface and you have to move and fight on it. The women's draw will be won by the most immobile player in it

Well I'm pretty sure the eventual winner won't be Serena who that is no doubt aimed at.

So, with Kiki getting hammered today and Fiona Ferro coming very close against Brady but never looking like she was really going to do it (and having a go at the umpire just before serving to take it into a TB in the third - it was almost as though she was giving herself an excuse to get broken and lose), that's all the French women players out...... to much gnashing of French teeth ...... especially as the men are about to be the same....

Yeah, it's largely been disappointing for them on the women's side. I still think they would have happily taken their R1 showing, and wouldn't have replayed the matches if they had the chance, but not great without an entrant in R3, even if 3 of the the 4 were playing seeded players.

Mind, while I'd love a little group of 4 GB women ranked between 50-65, even if weren't doing too much on the grand scheme of things, I can't see 3 of them getting anywhere near their respective career highs again (I know Tan made R2, not Cornet), and their better days seem behind them, and while Ferro is a bit younger, I'm not really sure of her ceiling. I'm not sure she's good enough away from clay to be a solid top 25 type player, and it clearly doesn't help her cause when she's missing at least 75% of the clay season through injury.

If Gasquet loses tonight, it'll be the first time ever, in history, that France hasn't had anyone through to R3.

And it's no good everyone always looking down the line (oh, there's Burel, and Parry, and Elsa). It's true but the question is really why the current women (and those before) have not performed. It's causing a real stink....

Baffles me how a player can win a set against Serena and not realise that that's the only thing that she needs to continue to do. It's not like Serena has any other game plan, will suddenly be able to move and also go super saiyan

Pliskova is pretty bad at moving also.

Yes, if you're doing something that is working? Against a player who can only play 1 way, the only way it stops working is if you stop doing it. So would have been the day Pete Sampras only rolled in second serves and decided to grind from 3m behind the baseline no? Live by the sword
