Week 20 - ITF (W25) Pelham, USA, Clay

This tournament really doesn't fit with qualifying for RG so I'm not sure how relevant this result is to Jodies chance to make it through qualifying, assuming she is still intending to take a place if offered. Realistically she couldn't have gone much further and still been able to make sign in. She must have felt she needed another match after losing so early last week or she has withdrawn from RG and actually did want to compete here properly.

The MTO wasn't for Jodie, it was for Sofia

She needed to wait sufficient time before travelling back to UK to avoid hard quarantine from being in a red list country (Ecuador), so may as well come here and play an event than just have a training week somewhere else in the US.

Yeah, possibly, and you're right in that if she did want to play RG quals then she'd certainly want to be out within the next round or two, but it's still a bit disappointing in conjunction with her other recent results, especially that 400 odd Japanese player who's now lost all 8 sets in and around that win, and lost 1 and 0 at this event yesterday. In hindsight, she would have probably been better off going somewhere like Antalya to hopefully get some wins and red clay practice.

We'll see what the next 2 or 3 weeks brings about, but just not ideal that she's basically added nothing (literally 2 points) to her (singles) tally since winning that W25 title 6 and a half weeks ago, and with her being probably my favourite GB player, I just hope it doesn't affect her level of grass opportunities.

Pretty disappointing day for Jodie and Swanny.

She is a net -12 since the Dubai points were added.(288 points on 12 Apr, 276 points in live rankings). She has 25 points due off from a W25 Jerusalem win in 2019, although I'm not sure whether they come off on 31 May or after RG as they would have done if RG had not been delayed. If they come off before RG she will definitely need a qWC for Wimby instead of probably needing one. The good news she has nothing else coming off this year that isn't replaced by a non counter of equal value.

Given that there will no doubt now be a WTA ( and ATP ) rankings update on 31/05, I see no reason that Jodie will not drop these 25 points then.

Thanks Red, I didn't even consider subsequent points to drop, just the fact that the one win in Ecuador at the time replaced a 5 point counter, with it now being 7 points for a W25 R1 win, but yes, the further the way she is from the Q cut off, the less likely she'll jump two queues. I guess if she did do OK in Nottm and her ranking ended up inside, or in and round, the Q cut off, admittedly 2 or 3 weeks too late, then if could maybe influence things come decisions time, but just a shame that she's gone off form at a pretty crucial time.

Sorry, thinking about it further I now disagree with myself  These points for Jodie would not have added until after RG 2019, on 10/06, so in theory they are due off on 07/06/21. But as that is the midpoint of fhe delayed French Open they should come off post RG, on 14/06. No-one shoud be dropping points on 31/05.

I don't think Jodie could have stayed in this tournament beyond Thursday so maybe the 1st set was more representative of her form.

You're probably right there about the first set, but I wouldn't read too much into the result. Sofia seems to be in top form, despite a pulled ab restricting her serve, and has won two more matches to reach the semis.
