My theory is that US college players are always stronger at doubles (relatively to 'normal' ITF players of the same ranking).
They've had three/four years of specific coaching for doubles, and a lot of key double match practice, playing with lots of different partners.
Some players from countries with strong team tennis also play a fair bit of doubles but nowhere near as much focus as the college system, and players from non-team tennis countries often barely play any, just odds and sods in ITF events.
So I always reckon on the US college kids to do well.
It's not foolproof obviously but seems to be true and makes sense to me....
