Sometimes everything seems to go awry at the same time - with Fran's thrashing against a Spaniard on clay, it has been a terrible week for our women on clay. The bigger perspective has to be that the surface for all our players has been clay, but it doesn't give me any confidence that any of our players are going to do well at the French Open. Hopefully Harriet is keeping herself fresh for the qualification for that, but disappointed at the results for Jo Ko, Heather, Katie S and Jodie B this week, and with Harriet's pull out, it feels like the grass season can't come soon enough.
Frustrating because as Andy says it's been an awful week so I was looking forward to Harriet being a bright spot. Atleast she has had quite a few matches lately though.
These days I'm more surprised when the girls play than when then withdraw. Depressing times - and I find it hard to believe that a change of surface will provide the answer to all our problems!! I really hope I'm wrong.
Not GB related, but I see Lily was 4-6 2-5* down to 2nd seed Astra Sharma, who won the WTA Charleston 250 event in her last tournament, but has won 5 games on the spin to take it into a decider.
Ah, looks like Sharma has just retired, so she was maybe hampered towards the end, but that's still a scalp and a half for her, and a top seed out of the way.
Their next opponents match was interrupted last night, so will continue as the first match today. The other semi-final is on the order of play, so I expect Tara and Emina will also play later on.
