Yeah, Errani was the 1/2 pre match favourite, so no surprise in that respect. Neither in great (recent) form, but clay and home would likely sway it in Errani's favour.
All feels a bit stale on the WTA (top 100) scene at the moment, could badly do with some new faces.
That might not be 100% accurate, but a good gauge. Heather clinging on to her Olympics hopes. Cut off is the ranking after Roland Garros and she's currently (around) 55 of the 56 direct entrants, and current 1st alt (Golubic) has a W125k final tomorrow which would really close the gap were she to win.
I'm a bit lost with the rain delay, but I think Jo vs Ostapenko will be on soon. Play is back underway, and google currently showing 7.15pm, so possibly warming up as I type.
Second serve is just being destroyed. Straight winners almost every time. Didn't build on last week's improvements at all, and she was just demolished. Not much more than a target practice session for Ostapenko, I'll be interested to see if she can keep this level for the rest of the week.
It's obviously not her fault, and the system is starting to slowly sort itself out, but that little 16 next to Jo's name is a bit of a mockery, especially when the likes of Pegula aren't seeded and have to play the 2nd seed in R2. She's now lost 10 of her last 15 (despite being a relatively high seed in most of those events), down at 84 in the live race, about 80% of her points coming prior to before September 2019, 20 months ago - far too long ago IMO for her to be ranked so high, and she probably will be the seeded player that most of the 'dangerous floaters' would like to meet early in RG, although given the system, there are a few others in the same boat.
It obviously always could have been a tough match against such a dangerous and unpredictable opponent, but the match basically passed her by.
For about the last 6 tournaments, Ostapenko seems to win one match, then lose in R2, so it will indeed be interesting to see if she can keep that level up, probably not going by recent form, but a joy to watch when she is on.
Still top 20 it seems. Not sure thats deserved but it is what it is.
Take your pick of OER or live-tennis.
Regarding Rome, Jo was RU in May 2019 for 585 points and L16 in September 2020 for 105 points. She went into this week counting 585 points for Rome, ie the higher from the 2 years.
1) OER: live down 584 points to live #21 on 2652 points
- this was what I was assuming, a net reduction of 584, taking out the existing Rome counter and replacing it by 1 ( her best non counter )
2) live-tennis: live down 480 points to live #20 on 2756 points.
- initially confuddled by this, I now assume that this is a net reduction of 585 - 105 = 480. They appear to be yes removing her 585 Rome counter but replacing it with her 105 points from last September. I had assumed once the Rome counter had been decided as the greater of 2019 and 2020 ( in line with general 'greater of' counters, the lower score was dead and buried even though it is from just 8 months ago. But live-tennis are considering otherwise and now counting it??
