Week 19 - ATP Masters 1000 - Internazionali BNL d'Italia - Rome, Italy (clay)

nadal is getting well and truly beaten by shapo in rome...if he loses, 2 qf's and a last 16 to show for the 3 masters 1000 events on clay

a bit up and down but first set goes away 6-3 for Liam and Andy. But we had a similar scenario yesterday, so lots to play for still

It's one thing getting a set and a break off Rafa, much harder to maintain that level. One set all....

L16:  (8) Kevin Krawietz & Horia Tecau (GER/ROU) CR 40 (16+24) defeated (ALT) Liam Broady & Andy Murray CR 429 (315+114) by 3 & 4

Nice while it lasted.

News from the Beeb on Andy's prospects of a WC for Roland-Garros as a result partly of what has happened in Rome this week.

A shame they couldn't go any further. However the positives Andy got a couple of matches in to show tournament organisers he is probably ready for a WC. Liam didn't have a completely wasted week and earnt a decent sum. He has also now got into Geneva Qualifying so he can prepare for that at the weekend.

I understood that Andy was in discussions with both Geneva and Lyon over a MDWC, from news reports at the weekend just gone, not sure if they have come to nothing, entry lists suggest WC's are still to be allocated at both...

Joe and Rajeev progressing well here, good test on clay next, would be a good win (but definitely winnable).

Reilly Opelka impressing - last 8 and he has had 3 straight set wins over Gasquet. Musetti and Karatsev.

He now plays qualifier Delbonis. Big one for both of those two. But Opelka is doing an Evo from Monaco.

Good stuff by Opelka though it can certainly be a blessing on clay to be in Medvedev's section. Karatsev beat Medvedev and was in turn beaten by Opelka.

Medvedev is at WR 2 and will remain there after this week but if he could actually replace fairly crap clay points with decent clay points, he could be challenging Djokovic for WR 1. We shall see what he replaces his existing 10 RG points with come that time.

Djokovic vs Tsitsipas ( Monte Carlo winner ) and Nadal vs Zverev ( Madrid winner ) should be very interesting.

Full QF draw :
(1) Djokovic vs (5) Tsitsipas
Sonego vs (7) Rublev
(Q) Delbonis vs Opelka
(6) Zverev vs (2) Nadal

Opelka did it again, a straight sets win in the QF round and into the semis - Nadal or Zverev next!

Good week for him - reminds me of Johan Kriek reaching the semis in the FO way back, he had no pedigree on clay but somehow managed that, before getting trounced by Vilas

Tiger Tim did much the same in 2004.  He lost in 4 sets against Guillermo Coria. This is the match I would really loved for him to have won, much more so than his SF against Goran at Wimbledon. I would have given Tim a decent chance against the eventual winner Gaston Gaudio.  Tim winning the FO would have made everyone question how clay court tennis should be played.
