First set to Emily and looking at tables, I think she is guaranteed entering the half way point (and a gap til summer now) in this league as clear leader with Eliz pretty certain to be in second place.
I'm aware I've mentioned it about 5 times, but man, letting that *5-1 lead slip against Katherine the other day, who lost reasonably comfortably to the 3 other more competent players in the group, must be the biggest mystery in UK Pro League history. Literally one set needed to keep a top 2 finish in her own hands, and crumbled. She has won all 8 sets in her other 4 matches. Crazy.
She may well end up finishing 5th overall, and (although she would have been a big fave in a potential match with Nadia) could have just finished 4th had she have made the semi finals, so potentially only one place worse off, but a big opportunity passed her by.
She might finally get a Court 1 appearance tomorrow in her 5th/6th match, although saying that, if Freya loses her match to Emma later on, they'll probably find a way to prioritise Freya's 7th/8th playoff ahead of it.
And Emily beat Alice 6-4 6-0 in the first semi final. I was watching the other match during the first set, but it seemed competitive, and looks like they held serve until 4-4, until a crucial break. Second set wasn't competitive, with Alice only winning 6 points in 22 minutes. Still a very good week for her though, and probably has a decent chance of third place, depending on how the other SF goes.
Eliz came through in straight sets to make the final again. Meanwhile at the other end of the tables, Angelina took her tally of games won into double figures by taking three more against Katherine
Yep, well done Emily. Only got to see bits and pieces of the match, so can't really comment on how it went, but another strong week for her (even if her group did end up weaker due to withdrawals). Marcus Buckland was mentioning yesterday about rivalries emerging - I'm not sure what I think of that. Emily and Eliz have played 5 times in the past 6 weeks, and split them 3-2, and Eliz was 2-1 at the Pro Series last year, so that's 4-4 and most of them very competitive, and they are players who I have enjoyed watching, more than a lot of the field, and still young which is also a bonus, but at the same time, it would be nice to see some fresher faces emerge at the business end in future editions.
Alice finished 3rd, beating Nadia comfortably.
Katarina got the better of Freya again to finish 5th, this time on a MTB, after exchanging 7-6 5-7 sets. Great week for her, winning 5 of her 6 matches. I would have been interested to see how she matched up to the likes of Eliz and Emily, but hopefully we'll get the chance to see it in future weeks here, as she's been a great addition. Not such a great week for Freya though.
Emma finished 7th, beating Danielle seemingly comfortable.
I think Sofia's and Katherine still have their 9th and 10th match to come.
Jizel 'beat' Angelina, with the latter retiring at *1-2. Couldn't really see what happened, but wouldn't be too disappointed if that was the last we saw of her in the UKPL.
In fact, better than Freya has been playing for a while.
She had two very close line calls against her (one was definitely wrong, IMO).
Same as me, I saw bits and pieces of the actual sets, but did tune in for the MTB in full, and I think you mean the one to make it 4-2 instead of 3-3. I did think it looked OK as well. Obviously doesn't make up for that incident, but I think Katarina has generally been pretty lenient regarding close calls in earlier matches, kind of as if she would just accept it being a sort of 'outsider'. I think Freya did get it back on terms later on at 4-4 or 5-5, but it is obviously massive as it literally is a point off you and handed to your opponent. It was a good MTB though.
I think 9th place will be c. 14 points after this weeks matches (Liv Nicholls), so reckon the cut for the finals is falling maybe 30 points will make it.
Emily, Eliz, Freya and Alice G look like they should be home on 30 or more.
