Week 17 - UKPro League - Week 4, Loughborough (Indoor Hard)

Fair play to Eliz. I've never been or never will be in that sort of position sporting-wise, but while she is clearly one of the fittest players here on the women's side, she was guaranteed to top the group, and knows she has 2 bigger matches still to play (even a potential 3rd / 4th). I'm not sure if you get individual win bonuses or if it is purely end position based, but I think I'd have been more tempted to let certain points go and try and be off the court a bit sooner, even if a potential loss might disrupt momentum - you see it so many times in other sports if there's 'nothing to play for' and they have bigger and better things on the horizon. They'll probably still beat Newcastle regardless, ha, but I could see Arsenal making changes / 'preserving energy' on Sunday with Thursday in mind.

Freya does seems to be turning the second set around now, but her match on Weds with Katarina went about 2 hrs 30, her first set with Alice yesterday went 1 hr 40 mins, and now this as well. She'll certainly be earning her money this week, duration-wise, whichever playoff she ends up in.

Looking at the overall season long league table, Alice entered this week with 26 points and a semis place guarantees her 10 more, so 36 points*.

I think I reckoned above that 36 points would be my guess at the cut (based on very little evidence!!!) and I still reckon it will be. So I reckon that would put Alice into finals week in November alongside Emily Appleton and Eliz Maloney, with Freya (despite her bad week this week) looking close to joining them.

* 9th place after 3 weeks is 10 points, 15 in the mens. So extrapolating that to 8 weeks we would get 27-40 as a range at the end of 8 weeks. I don't see how that average will be sustained over 8 weeks but so taking 40 down a notch I reckoned it could end up in the mid 30's in both mens and womens, hence 36 (which was also my estimate after 2 weeks). I think TA might estimate it slightly higher than 36 - perhaps like the Premier League football, 40 points would in fact be a pretty good safe bet above which anyone is definitely going to be qualified?!

Well, I'm really pleased for Alice, Ace

I honestly know nothing about the girl, her background or anything.

But she's always seemed like a really hard worker, who doesn't seem to ever have been one of the LTA faves (maybe when she a lot younger, don't know, might be wrong) and who I really enjoyed watching on the Tour because she knows what sort of tennis she wants to play, doesn't go in for ridiculous dramatics, and stood out for me as having more natural skill than the majority of the others in that sort of cohort.

I'm glad she's earned some dosh !

I'm glad you're glad CD. biggrin

Freya takes the second set 6-2, so she is on 6 points minimum, not sure how they will sort out the 3 of them if FC, KS, and KB all end on 6 points and all 3 have exchanged wins, maybe (individual) games won or games F and A difference, in which case Freya will likely be a good bet, but let's see how this MTB goes (and how Katarina gets on later).

I'm not sure if we'd got the prize money completely sorted out but, repeating the commentator, if you finish in the 9-12 play-off block, there's max prize money of £500, and if you finish in the 5-8 block, there's max prize money of £1500

There was some work done a few weeks ago but that would seem to align with £125 increments (500, 375, 250, 125) for 9-12; and then £250 increments in 5-8 (1500, 1250, 1000, 750).

Maybe 1-4 places are £500 increments ie 3500, 3000, 2500, 2000 - so we would have:

1 - 3500

2 - 3000

3 - 2500

4 - 2000

5 - 1500

6 - 1250

7 - 1000

8 - 750

9 - 500

10 - 375

11 - 250

12 - 125

That is probably completely wrong but TA had it all worked out somewhere so am sure will correct this!!!

Freya wins the MTB, so things are much clearer now. She will definitely finish 3rd or 4th (and the better playoff), Katherine either 4th or 5th, both dependent on how Katarina gets on later. She needs one set to finish 3rd, but if she loses in straight sets again, then it'll be 5th for her.

No, I didn't have it worked out, and haven't seen the figures anywhere. I was just going on something the commentators said on the Sunday of the second week. £ 500 appearance fee plus £3,750 for winning and £3000 for the runner-up. So I think the figures you have suggested are a little on the low side for the top places, but I also have a suspicion that last place doesn't get anything.

Danielle has just beaten Sofia so will finish 4th, and play either Freya or Katarina tomorrow. Katarina vs Jizel coming up on that court next.

Katarina beat Jizel 6-4 6-1 to secure 3rd spot and a match with Danielle tomorrow. 6 breaks in a row to start it off, and Jizel held first to lead 4-3*, and looked like she may take the first set, but like a lot of her matches here, she often fades after a decent start.

So most things decided now:

Emily vs Alice
Eliz vs Emma/Nadia winner

Katarina vs Danielle
Emma/Nadia loser vs Freya

Katherine vs Angelina
Sofia vs Jizel

Nadia beats Emma 3-6 6-3 10-8 to book her SF spot. Came back from 0-5 and 4-8 down in the MTB. I was hoping Emma would have won being a rare local player, but it meant a lot to Nadia at the end, and she has been a UK Pro League/Series stalwart, I think she's been in pretty much every edition since it started last year, doubt it would have been more than one that she missed, so nice for her to get a first ever SF spot. Emma got very tight towards the end.

You'd think there would be 2 clear favourites to book their place in the final, but there has been a few betting upsets this week, so who knows.

Emily vs Alice
Eliz vs Nadia

Katarina vs Danielle
Emma vs Freya

Katherine vs Angelina
Sofia vs Jizel
