Week 17 - UKPro League - Week 4, Loughborough (Indoor Hard)

Nadia beat Danielle 7-5 6-4, so that should be Emily as group winner, and then a straight shootout between Nadia and Emma tomorrow for 2nd place.

Alice beat Freya 7-5 6-3, first set lasted about 1 hr 40 mins and Freya had a MTB at the end of that set. That's Freya out of realistic contention now, and Katarina and Eliz should really seal top 2 from here, Eliz will if she beats Jizel in straights later, and Katarina just needs 4 points from her two remaining matches against Katherine and Jizel. Alice and Freya may well meet again on Sunday providing there's no further withdrawals.

Jizel has retired at 2-5 vs Eliz, so I assume that will be 3 points for Eliz, and through to semi final, with a match to spare.

Katarina *5-1 up on Katherine. Not sure who is next on standby if Jizel won't be able to play tomorrow - she was due to play Katarina, so could be crucial in terms of top 2 positions.

Wow. A hell of a turnaround here, Katherine suddenly can't miss, and has just won the last 6 games to take the first set 7-5. I'm pretty sure Bet365 had her at 15/2 or 8.5 this morning, so I can't imagine what they would have had on her in play at 1-5*. Katherine is still 7/2 to take the 2nd set, and 6/5 to win the match.

IF she could win in straight sets then it would massively shake this group.

Katherine 7-5 6-4 in what I believe is the longest odds win for a completed match in the whole series, I can't think of any others off the top of my head.

Advantage Alice now I think. I believe she plays Katherine tomorrow, and if there is a straight sets winner they would go through, along with Eliz, but if they split sets, then Katarina could still sneak through the backdoor with a win, but she will be absolutely kicking herself for letting that *5-1 first set lead slip - a single set would have kept it in her own hands.

Death, Taxes, and Emily Appleton on Court 1, ha.

I see they have put her completely academic match with Angelina on Court 1 (one is finishing 1st, one is finishing 6th, and it'll be like 1/1000 vs 50/1) over Alice vs Katherine which will likely decide the group. Meh.

Edit- That was a screenshot of the official tables - I think I'll go back to pre-processing in word so they are more legible.

Imagine if Freya finishes 5th in that league, and ends up having to face Angelina in a 9-12 playoff on Saturday. Not been a great time for her on court, struggling at W15 level, and can't even seem to get anything going at UKPL level either. It must be so frustrating for her given her top 300 career high as an 18 year old, and being a million miles away from that 5 years later and seeing GB (near enough) contemporaries in and around grand slam qual level. Hopefully things can pick up for her.

Looks a decent day tomorrow. 2 effective winner take all matches with 2nd place on the line. Even Danielle vs Sofia is a shootout to finish 4th and to get into the bigger money playoff positions. I guess Freya could technically still just about finish second, but she'd have to beat Eliz in straight sets, and hope for some perfect results elsewhere going her way.

Freya - IMO - so desperately needs a new coach

With a new mindset

She needs something, she is so much better than this.

Alice has taken the first set off Katherine 6-2, but Katherine is a very early break up in the 2nd. I think it would be more interesting generally / neutrally if they did split sets. It would then swing back into Katarina's favour, at least into her hands anyway, but I see her odds are a lot closer today after that defeat yesterday, so she wouldn't be tied to beat Jizel 2-0 later on. If Alice takes this set then the top 2 spots are done and dusted.

Gillan through to the SF after beating Katherine 6-2 6-4. Probably the least of the 4 I was hoping would make it to be honest, but to be fair, that's a bit of a Houdini act considering the position she was in yesterday morning. Needed to beat Freya, ideally in straight sets, as the underdog - she did, needed Katarina to lose to Katherine in straight sets, as a huge favourite, and *5-1 up in set 1, she did, and then needed to beat Katherine today, ideally in straight sets, she did.

Still positions 3-5 to sort out, and to avoid the bottom playoff. Eliz currently has 4 SPs in the opening set against Freya - that must have been another very long set for Freya - she's been on court a lot this week!

Yes, a very long first set between Freya and Eliz, over 100 points, with Eliz taking it in the tie-break.

Well, I'm really pleased for Alice, Ace

I honestly know nothing about the girl, her background or anything.

But she's always seemed like a really hard worker, who doesn't seem to ever have been one of the LTA faves (maybe when she a lot younger, don't know, might be wrong) and who I really enjoyed watching on the Tour because she knows what sort of tennis she wants to play, doesn't go in for ridiculous dramatics, and stood out for me as having more natural skill than the majority of the others in that sort of cohort.

I'm glad she's earned some dosh !
