Week 16 - ITF (W25) Oeiras, Portugal Clay

Singles main draw is out, and Em has a decent start with a Portuguese Wild Card

Doubles
L16:- Sofia Shapatava (GEO) / Emily Webley-Smith (GBR) CR330 (167+161) [1] v Lea Boskovic (CRO) / Seone Mendez (AUS) (358+367)

Chance for revenge, as this pair beat them 3 & 3 in the QF at the W25 in Poitiers in February, before losing in the final.

Q2: WEBLEY-SMITH, Emily (GBR) 7 453 (CH=240 2011) def DAPKUTE, Iveta (LTU) 16 976 5-3 6-1

R1: WEBLEY-SMITH, Emily (GBR) Q 453 (CH=240 2011) v SANTOS, Ana Filipa (POR) WC 1193 (CH=832 2019)

This looks very winnable. With a bit of lucK Emily could extend her run to three winning matches.

Emily first up on centre at 10am, match will be streamed. Doubles mid afternoon on an unstreamed court, a tricky opener but if they come through that they stand a good chance.

And I forgot to say, Sofia also made it through qualifying today.

Not a good start by Em, broken to love twice, and not worked out her opponent yet. 0-3*

Santos served for the set twice and eventually won it 7-4 in the breaker. Not a good performance but you can see where the surface struggle comes in, various things she does just not really working.

6-7(4) *2-1 and it's raining.

Only a very brief shower.

It's now 4-2*

Em needs to put away her volleys rather than just placing them - the court is too slow for her game.

Up a gear, and takes the set 6-2. Some great shots in the last game to serve it out to love.

Yes absolutely, she has a nasty habit of that particularly with smashes of trying to do something clever rather than just slamming it away. In doubles it too often let's opponents back in.

Stronger finish though to that set. Got some cheap points on serves, and Santos is standing way too far back to return so Emily was able to do a couple of stop volleys as a second shot to wrap up the point.

Looks very windy.

6-7(4) 6-2 0-0*

Yes, we've seen some horrors over the years in the that department.

Which is slightly strange as she has a decent-ish serve.

Of course, the other woman has just tried to smash the ball properly and overshot the baseline by a country mile

Bit of a struggle holding serve - 30 points in her two service games.
But gets another break. *4-1

Clay court, two middle to low ranked women, dampish conditions - serve is not likely to be much of an advantage.

But she looks to have it pretty much in hand - *5-2 #fingerscrossed
