Can Fran get an SE into Bogota now or has she completely lost the chance to compete there?
Does Fran have to win the tournament to make it worthwhile skipping Bogota?
That's something we will never know, she could've scratched this and lost in 1st round of qualifying. There'll be plenty of (bigger) opportunities come her way soon enough.
We'll never fully know as emmsie says, and she'll definitely get more chances in the near future, but I personally think she's made the right decision.
Just looking at the WTA Bogota Q draw, it isn't the strongest field, relatively, but Fran would have just been behind the 12th Q seed Melnikova in the pecking order, so would have been unseeded, and thus most likely would have had to beat 2 higher ranked players for 18 points, whereas, although the first 2 matches this week proved to be well contested battles, she received the exact same amount of points for beating 2 450-750 players, and Naiktha, with the possibility for more to come. She may well have qualified, possibly would have been one of the favourites to do so, and she did beat the Q4 seed just last week (comfortably), but even if she loses today, it's still been a profitable event, less travelling in tough geographical conditions, and she can look forward to the European clay season with some solid matches, and wins behind her, but hopefully she can stay in Argentina a little longer.
The first semi final involving Haddad Maia is just about to get underway (warming up), and Fran will follow on directly.
From the start I thought the right thing was for Fran to give it her absolute best shot here and then whatever would be would be.
Even without the travelling and altitude to me it would have been trying to be too clever by half to plan anything else. With these additional elements Bogota surely had to be only a fall back option if Fran had been beaten early here.
I mean it's not uncommon to see some perhaps surprising results in smaller ITF events, like Badosa losing 1 and 2 or something to Emma in Bolton a couple of years ago, and appeared in WTA Istanbul quals a couple of days later. Kung losing 2-6 2-6 in a Thai W25 QF last Feb and then headed to WTA Hua Hin quals the next day, and ended up making the final and earning 198 points and $21k, so there can be like a potential bigger carrot at the end of the road, not to say those 2 were necessarily tanking in their defeats, but there will be many examples of players signing up to one event, playing, but having 'bigger and better' things on their mind, but I do agree, if you're settled in an event that you signed up to in the first place, decent enough points at stake, go all out for that event as a first priority.
That bigger and better things line made me think of this absolute classic between Vickery and Mertens in Hobart a few years ago. I can't find a video unfortunately (there definitely used to be one on YouTube), but it was hilarious scenes:
