Yeah, Mertens has been one of the more solid and consistent players for a while now, and pretty much always beats who she is 'supposed' to. She shouldn't fear the (traditionally) lesser Pliskova, but I can't help but feel she may have been better off in quals for more chance of a win, or a string of matches, but it's obviously out of her control. I haven't really dug deep into the prize money situation, but by the sounds of it, even that's probably not a massive advantage for being in the main draw directly.
There's enough of a difference from the money point of view. FQR = $5,890 and R1=$10,000, R2 is $18,000.
The points are probably more significant. FQR is 20 points, qualifier is 30 points, R1 loser is 10 points, and R2 is 35 points. So two qualifying wins and a first round loss is better than a straight first round loss when you are chasing points rather than money.
On Harriet's court, Osuigwe's woes continue, her form has been really poor for about 20 months now (relatively, for someone of her potential), but in the following match, Niculescu, on an 8 match losing streak, looks on course to win only a second set out of her last 18.
A couple of promising 15 year olds will be on court soon as well, but not against each other.
Whitney seems like a lovely young lady (I sat next to her for a couple of hours over lunch at Wimbly qualis - not that she'll remember )
But I've always thought she was more promising in the eyes of her father, and maybe the federation, that in reality.
I know she won the French Open (juniors) and was a very able youngster.
But she's been coached to within an inch of her life and that doesn't always leave you much upside.
I also thought (just from a few comments she made over lunch) that it wasn't really her who was pushing to play, who wanted to do the extra practice that Dad was trying to get her to do, etc. etc.
Now that can be a one-off, obviously, but it can also be the sign of an overly trained kiddie who's not really doing it for herself. Not sure but I don't think the drop off in results since going pro is that surprising.
You never know CD, she might constantly be saying, I once sat with this knowledgeable chap over lunch, not that they'll remember
Interesting comments, I've heard a few mention that they don't think she enjoys being on court, and looks like she would rather be a million other places, I guess a long run of bad form could make you that way, but just look at her results from say October 2018 (when she would have been 16 and a half) to May 2019 - a number of W80/100 titles and finals, and some notable scalps, but it's been pretty downhill in comparison ever since RG 2019
Looks like Niculescu has retired at 6-2 0-4, so Harriet should be on court soon. I was hoping that would have gone deep into a third as I'm quite enjoying this Eala match. 2 SPs for the young'un.
Which she takes on the first attempt.

That seems a rather odd system.
Why don't Amazon usually cover qualifying? It is presumably the same feed after all
