I don't normally get in the middle of these back and forth but...with respect, did anyone actually watch the match? I did (helpful to live on the east coast). Kvitova was outstanding. Her first set was Wimbledon final vs Bouchard-type-quality. She would've beaten anyone last night.

The point being, let's not get too fatalistic about Jo's career based on the result last night. Yes, very fair in context to say Jo isn't 2017 or even 2019 Jo right now. She doesn't give much away re the state of injuries either but clearly, she's managing her knee. The second serve has gone, I'm curious whether the knee has been a factor here.

She needs matches and confidence. That's what helped her in 2019 during the clay-court run. A few scrappy wins turned into arguably her most successful period. I don't think there's any evidence that Jo isn't fully committed to this - we have data points - she has been written off before and come back, she's also someone we know to respect the process. Process people are serious people. Let's not equate results with commitment so quickly.

Given that Zavialoff wasn't with her in Aus, hopefully we'll start to see the results of some extended time together soon.

Yes, I was up at 4am BST thanks to the the Miami downpour (OK so I'm retired) but well put LordBrown, my feelings entirely.

Id go further and say British womens tennis as a whole is in a poor place right now, however we spruce it up. I hope it improves and we have players like Fran, Matilda, one or two others to hold onto but lets not polish up our top players and say they are doing well.

As for Fed Cup, I hope I am wrong but am fearful that we wont be able to put Mexico to the sword. Whatever jos history in Fed Cup , and that wasnt my point, I dont think she is in good enough form to feel confident in that tie and is best off out of it.

Re first sentence -  What's new there!? Also men's isn't looking a whole lot brighter... Apart from doubles

Indeed FW. We have quite a number of reasons for disappointment with our women but also optimism re some.  As you say, what's new?  Of course we look for more and hoped for the Katies etc generation ( still one of our better ones ) to push on more than they have. But historically our women are actually overall in a not bad pisition compared to previous years, eg. the top 10 average ranking stands up pretty well. Now not as good as we would like / it arguably should be but it's not as if it has been much better for a long long time. Other than the fairly brief Bally & Anna K / Laura & Heather overlap, you'ed really have to be going back to rhe Wade/Barker era for much better.

I kind of agree about our men except I'd go further. I often feel they get off quite lightly since less forensic interest. While we have our very top players like Dan and Cam doing pretty well, our men's situation re depth and players coming through really is bad and I expect will increasingly show up as so compated to our women.

Re Jo, all things are relative but I think Jon and others are going a bit OTT. "Woeful" to me is far too strong for a player that I feel Harrygem is possibly not far off in rating as a 35 to 55 ranking on curnent form. As for the Petra defeat, Petra can do that to some of the best when really on it and she apparently played very well. Yes, Jo seems generally well off her own best but bearing also in mind Jo's knee issues, and I give her much more of a pass for now.

Re the Billy Jean Cup I understand her missing it even if even on her currsnt form she is clearly worth a starting place. Anyway, we will almost certainly still beat Mexico.

Nina Stojanovic who beat Heather in the first round gave a walkover to Naomi Osaka in the third round due to a right thigh injury.

Thanks for the report on the match and on Jo. I did not see it, way too late for me. Jo had no chance against a 'hot' Kvitova which is nice to know going forwards to the next tournament. There is hope! smile

I've enjoyed this event, reasonably happy with who's left, more so if we get an Osaka vs Andreescu SF, but man, it legit feels weeks ago since Harriet beat Zhu, yet it was only last Monday evening. Crazy.

Gee wizz Ash Barty makes it look easy. Wins the final after Bianca Andrescu retires after going over slightly on her ankle but she looked well in control anyway.
