It looks as if Katie Boulter got one of the MD slots at the last minute, she was 12th alt just over 3 weeks ago and two out last night.

According to Miami's tournament list on wikipedia, Katie B is using her Protected Ranking to play here - not sure if that is correct though.

Her official ranking is outside the top 300, so wouldn't have even be close to making qualifying without using PR

Jo is seeded 17, and has a bye, Heather has drawn a qualifier.

Im amazed how the womens field has held together, the 32 seeds come from 36
Top ranked players, as opposed to the mens decimation. Anyone
Know why that is, other than having Charleston just after to tempt players on the trip!

Tournament commitments reapply to women from this week and COVID-19 ranking changes have ended as of today. As a mandatory tournament if they don't play they will lose their points and have a 0 point counter. Mens ranking continue with their "best of" until August so they have no need to play to protect their ranking..

R1: KONTA, Johanna (GBR) 17 18 (CH=4 2017) v Bye
R1: BOULTER, Katie (GBR) 319 (CH=82 2019) v PLISKOVA, Kristyna (CZE) 78 (CH=35 2017)

Jo's next opponent will be Robin Montgomery or Magda Linette, she hasn't played either before.
If Katie wins her next opponent will be Elise Mertens.
If Heather wins her next opponent will be Yulia Putintseva. The record is 2-1 to Yulia.

 Katie has drawn Kr. Pliskova.

Is that a better draw for Katie than playing her sister would have been?

Kristyna hasn't been playing particulary well this year - four main draw defeats and three qualifying wins, and was beaten by Heather in the AO. Katie stands a chance !
Karolina on the other hand hasn't been in good form, but still has main draw wins, and is still WR6

Miami quals start in an hour, which sounds crazy, but I suppose we are still just 4 hours ahead of local time time.

Harriet follows Flipkens vs Osuigwe, and Samsonova vs Niculescu.

Can't see any sign of streaming yet. Unibet would often have their little symbol by now if they were covering them, but can't see anything yet.

Unibet are covering them.

I've got a few days off as I've got a fair amount of hols to take up before the end of the financial year, just had my first jab this morning (apparent underlying health issues, as I'm just 34...), so going to chill out this afternoon and have the matches on the telly (via my phone) in the background.

Unibet definitely taken over Bet365 as the go to place for official streams now.

I see from the official PDF draw that Katie was the last DA using her SR of 85
A win here would gain her around 15 places or so in the rankings, but with Mertens awaiting the winner further progress is unlikely I fear.
