I don't think it would be wise for her to do both given her injury woes recently so I guess we wait and see whether she makes the singles draw

The final two women's doubles wildcards have been left unallocated so Davis/Raina and Barthel/Wachaczyk are in. I didn't expect them to give one to Lissey and Liv but thought they might give one to Matilda and Eva.

Compare and contrast Alicia & Olivia's record with some of the fully allocated men's doubles WCs ( on top of a good number of British men's direct doubles entries ).

Ten of the top eleven British doubles players are in the draw (the exception is Jo). Lissey and Liv are the next two on the list, and wil overtake Jodie when their recent points go on. (Figures from WTA and Coric) But as Indy says, compare their recent record with the men's WC's and they are hard done by. (Played 9, W7 L2 this month alone - and a trophy to show for it)

Although the Greeks' WC was brought up in the men's WC thread, I and a couple of others indicated it didn't concern us ( I think it can be argued as an interesting addition to the men's doubles, when so few top singles players play Slam men's doubles, and with a couple of good wins as a pair this year from other WCs which have helped Petros into the doubles top 300. Petros's singles MD WC in Marseille was much more controversial ). I was more comparing with certain other men's doubles WCs.

If you are going to have Slam MD WCs ( which as some know I generally wouldn't though more particularly for singles which is a more clearcut single ranking order without the pairs dynamic ) then I am happy with Tsitsipas xs 2, though I separately see the case for Alicia & Olivia. The arguably worst tbing is not fully using up the available women's WC allocation when rhe girls had a case and the other Slams fully use all their WC allocations.

There's a veteran's tour, isn't there? (Or seniors or whatever they call it now). I don't follow it but I know it's big.

I would be quite happy with them giving the top veterans' entrants a wildcard.

Doubles lends itself to older players, obviously, and I quite like the marketability of 'Seniors Wildcard Team', although I think seniors starts now at 30+ which is daft so maybe I'd make is specifically a 40+ Seniors wildcard.

I like the 'oldies against the young'uns' idea. And maybe spectators would root for the oldies, coz they empathise with them etc. etc.

But the point comes back to the daftness of not using the wildcards. For GB players or other interesting combos. Both of which boosts crowds.

So I have no problem with the Greeks getting one - spectators will LOVE seeing Stefanos (If you've got a ticket for outside courts and you find Tsisti is on it, you'll be thrilled, and if you have to get little bro too, well, that's fine, and it'll be a story to tell).

So, yes, give it to Liv and Liss, or Eva and Matilda, or Sue Barker and whoever she wants to play with ! It's a wildcard, it's supposed to allow the organisers to make the event more attractive - use it !

Harriet: R1 loss

Jodie: R1 loss

Sam: R1 loss

Fran: R1 loss

Emma is obviously the stand-out, with Katie B's performance, including a very tight loss against the 2nd seed, right up there too. Two excellent wild-card showings (and still counting .....)

Sam posted a decent score, against the woman who then put out Azarenka (12th seed).

Fran was only a tiny bit off the pace against Coco - I thought that was an excellent match from her

Harriet was clearly outclassed but was playing a top player.

Jodie played a poor match.

Given the disappointment of the direct acceptances (Joko having to withdraw, and Hev's nightmare), I think the wildcards have had a good year - and still counting.....

I agree. A good show based on rankings. Fran and Katie were very good and with that level performance against lesser players in the draw, would have won. Katie really upped her performance from the first round as well. Hopefully that will give her the confidence to maintain that level of performance that got her to the top 100 before her injury.

Jodie needs a bit of a run to get her mojo back.

Also a mention for Katie Swan who more than justified her QWC too.

Giving Emma a main draw wildcard was probably a very wise move. Not only has she excelled but it has made it physically less demanding than it might have been. If she had played in the qualifying tournament she would have had to play five very tough matches, probably all against higher ranked players, to get where she is now. We have seen too many young players burn fiercely for a few years and then fade as injuries take over.
